SSR....honestly answer this for me

I have stayed at all of the onsite DVCs and I love SSR! It is the right mix of fancy and upscale and relaxed and casual (make sense? probably not :rotfl: ). I am happy at all of them but I really like SSR. I love the pools, the view of DTD (if I get it), the walk to DTD ,the colors of the buildings, the inside decor, Artist Pallete, parking lot out side of the door, and the fact that you can walk to DTD and catch a bus to any resort for dinner.

I don't mind the oudoor hallways. I think that SSR gets a bad rap for that. I have stayed at a 5 star hotel in Hawaii and one in Key West that had the same hall set up. It is nice to go out and see the Florida sun outside my door. That is what I came for. I guess it is all in how you look at it. Which is why you need to take some of these comments with a grain of salt. What I think feels tropical someone else thinks is cheap moderate. (I would have never thought of the moderate thing, if it weren't for others obsevations on this board.)

There are all kind of negative comments on all of the DVC resorts. I don't let it get me down. Besides I can go to any of them. They are all great!

Good luck!

Could someone describe the outdoor hallways to me since I've never seen SSR? What does it remind you of (ex the halls to each room at a Value resort, Halls like the outside of a inner city motel?)

MY DF and I just bought into SSR sight unseen. For all of you who actually like the resort had you ever been to another DVC resort before? It seems like all of the folks who have something postive to say, are also the ones who have had their first DVC trip. The negatives seem to come from those who have been to VWL, BCV, BWV, OKW at least a few times before.

We've seen the other DVCs and really liked them, but we never saw SSR. I truly hope we won't be disappointed when we go home. Should we buy a different resort before the ink dries on our contract?

Hi there,

Your observations seem valid. We bought SSR in March, after we toured it, so it wasn't sight unseen. We loved it when we toured it... it was March, the pool was hopping, it was warm, that great Florida air... it was magical.... We went Home in Nov/Dec of last year... For whatever reason I wasn't as thrilled , I don't know why? Maybe I'm more of a summer person, who knows. The resort is still beautiful.. but it doesn't have the other magic that some of the other resorts have... in all fairness, I've only been to the PORFQ.. I've never stayed at any other resort.... I've visited the Grand Floridian and love that one, lol!! We do plan on trying them all out. But my daughter who is soon to be 18 LOVES SSR!! I think it's a big resort... and there was alot of walking involved for us on our trip but all in all we had a good time, we NEVER had a problem with the buses, they ran quite often... it was really quiet... I think next time we do stay, we'll request somewhere near the Springs b/c that's the closest to the main pool and my two youngest LOVED that pool when we visited last year.

Frankly, I'm just so happy to own part of DVC that if they gave me a cardboard box on property , I'd be thankful.

God I miss that place!!!

p.s. I'm happy to see you guys bought in, I remember you were having a hard time renting, right, was that you? Anyways , welcome HOME!!!!

Yep, that was us :wave2:
We did find someone who had enough points to rent from and she was very nice, but we decided just to buy for ourselves instead. With our 300 points in January we will have enough for our honeymoon and rooms for both sets of our parents for a whole week after the wedding. We are so excited about it :Pinkbounc

It doesn't look anythink like the NoTell Motel. These are large buildings with partially open corridors. Very beautiful buildings.

Thanks Deb! That helps a lot. It seems like a lot have issues with those corridors and the only reason I could fathom why was if they looked like a motel.

Sajetto, I can not help but think I know exactly how you feel. I made the decision to buy into SSR sight unseen, but with a slightly different twist. My wife and I had been looking at DVC since back in 2000 and were just swept away with the magic at the whole boardwalk area. The choice at the time was either BWV or BCV. Due to financial circumstances, we just could not afford to take the plunge and every year that we came back, it would heighten our desire to join, but the price just kept escalating. Finally in 2004, I decided to place a deposit after our second DVC tour over at BWV. I really wanted BCV but that was sold out through disney or you could wait for BCV points and not get the promotion. I was in Orlando 1 month before SSR was actually available to tour, all you could do was look at it across the water from DTD. Based on the fact I needed the promotion to save money, we made the deposit for SSR. For 1 year, I could not decide if I was making the right choice, so I did not sign the paperwork. I waited to see what kind of feedback SSR was generating and actual pictures of the resorts to help with my decision. Little did I know this made the decision even harder, because all I kept reading here on these boards was the exact same concerns and negative reaction that you are getting.

Later in 2004, things took on a much more serious nature in my family. My wife of 34 was diagnosed with breast cancer and I have DD5/DS1 to take care of. For 5 months, I was completely out of the loop regarding my DVC decision. In February 2005, with chemo out of the way and surgery/radiation just around the corner for my wife, I decided we needed to take the ultimate family vacation and get back to what life really needs to be about:

1. Understand how fortunate you are
2. Don't sweat the little things
3. Enjoy life each day

"Everyone is terminal, its what you do with your time and how you handle your flaws that defines you!" Craig McCarty

For us that meant going ahead with 160 points at SSR, and planning our ulitmate family vacation: 5 days at VB, 3 days on DCL, 4 days at BWV and 3 days at SSR. I have to admit my first choice was to squeeze in some time at BCV because I can not stop being in love with that pool for my young kids but when I booked everything in February '05, that was the best I could due for a May '05 trip. Needless to say, we had the time of our lives on that trip. Vero Beach is an absolutely beautiful resort on the ocean, although it is quiet nearby. BWV was very enjoyable and its location was everything it was talked up to be. Now for my opinion on SSR, the decision I had deliberated on for so long and bought into sight unseen:

1. SSR is definately massive, a feeling you just experience when you are driving around to your room.
2. Once you are settled in, it does take on a very small community feel with the 2 or 3 buildings in your area.
3. We were in CP and had a very nice view of DTD.
4. I was absolutely floored that we could walk to DTD in under 5 minutes with kids in tow.
5. It took slightly longer to walk to the main pool/dining (i.e. ~ 7 minutes) but no where near as long as I expected.
6. I thought the quiet pool at CP was very elegant and the main pool was outstanding even though I thought it could be larger to accomodate the size of the resort. I am not claiming to be an expert here on this one, I was just envisioning a sunny 85 day with the resort at full capacity.
7. The room decor and ammenities absolutely called out for deluxe status.
8. I actually prefer the open hallways to enjoy the warm Florida air (i.e. we are usually escaping Michigan in the winter) and avoiding the smells of room service or garbage as we walk to our destination. I can see the downside to this if it is pouring rain.
9. I loved the options that DTD affords for dining/entertainment. When my family comes to Florida for a typical week, we can not necessarily afford to go to a park everyday, thus limiting how advantageous the BWV/BCV draw is to park proximity. I am not saying we will not stay here because we already have and will continue to due so in the future.
10. I wish SSR would at least add counter service like you can find over at Pop Century, I think this would fill in the gaps for the dining options they are missing.
11. I do think 10 years from now SSR could maintain a slightly higher value on the resale market knowing the other resorts are expiring 12 years earlier.

Finally I could not be more happy about our DVC purchase, I love the fact that you can stay at all of them and experience what each has to offer in their own unique way no matter where you own. By the way, I was able to book BCV at the 7 month window for Easter '06. Whether I will be able to continue to due that in the future based on the size of SSR will be interesting to see!

Yes its going to be at the Wedding Pavillion. It is their most popular location for good reason b/c its the only one indoors. We are really looking forward to it. The planning gets to be a pain sometimes, but I think it will be worth it when we get all of the family together. :goodvibes

I am so humbled by your post. For the last 2 or 3 days, I have been agonizing over my decision to keep all 200 points at SSR or split them to 160 SSR and 50 VWL...something just draws me to that place...BUT in reading your post, I remembered the things in life I value the most: my children. and the reason I bought into DVC - something to give to my children. because life being what it is, is not to be taken for granted..and so, to quote you : I will NOT sweat the little stuff!

thank-you for opening my eyes..I hope your wife is feeling better and that she enjoys many many years to come with you and your children

Here is a photo of the front of the SSR building, if you look to the top floor you can see the open hallway. I find them very attractive. Due to the shape of the buildings, the front is more open as shown in this photo and when you turn a corner you have walls and doors to villas on both sides. Yes it concrete but it is painted to match the buildings and the walls are done in a stucco type finish. It is very well lit and the hallways are not long.

Many expensive resorts in Arizona and Hawaii have semi open corridors. This type of design is often seen in the Spainish Hacienda type building.

Sometimes I forget how lucky we are to just be going to WDW! Thanks for putting this in perspective. I hope your wife is feeling better every day and we wish you and your family many years of being "welcomed home"!

Thanks for the picture links!

We bought SSR sight unseen a year ago but took a tour during our previously scheduled trip to WDW in April. We were extremely impressed with the rooms - certainly deluxe! The pool is beautiful and the other ammenities (spa, tennis courts, etc.) add a great deal to the potential for relaxation - as we have gotten just a bit older this now takes the place of some of our commando park touring. :goodvibes We are taking our first trip "home" in just 6 weeks and I'm looking forward to experiencing a stay at SSR first-hand. I'll try to give a full report...

Thanks so much for the pictures guys! Pointing out the hallways really helped. Since they are covered, I don't see what the big deal is even if it rains. The only problem is if the wind was blowing the water in your direction.

Thanks again! :)

Unless its hurricane force we have been there many times in the rain and as long as you did not walk right up near the outside we never got wet. In fact it was nice to be able to walk to the ice machine, etc and get a breath of fresh air.

I've never been to the other DVC resorts but I cannot imagine not liking Saratoga Springs. It was so awesome to me. The rooms are immaculate and NEW........you can walk to marketplace (which I LOVE) and the pools are great. I love cause it is quiet too. We had such an awesome time there. I guess to each their own but for what it is worth I am antoher Saratoga Springs fan. :teeth:

sajetto,
We have stayed at VWL, OKW, HHI, BWV, SSR and BCV (we haven't tried Vero, yet). There are good things to say about all these resorts, it all comes down to personal preference. (We have points at BCV, BWV and SSR.)

There are some times of the year where I prefer one resort over another. For NYE, my favorite would be BCV. For Food and Wine Festival (where up 'til now our visits encompassed a Sat and/or Fri), my favorite would be BWV std view (we actually purchased a few more points just for the F& W festival staying at BWV).

There is a "Minnie"-marathon coming up in May--which I don't think we'll be able to participate in, but I would prefer to stay at SSR if we could for this because it is a DTD event. We bought a few extra SSR points for times when our focus of interest would be DTD. Also, SSR points are going to last longer than the others (and cost per point are cheaper right now)--so, we wanted a few SSR points, too.

My DH loved OKW the first time we stayed there. He liked the convenience of being able to park right out in front and the size of the accomodations. We also loved VWL because it is just gorgeous. I've never tried to get December accomodations there (because of DS's school schedule), but I have thought about a small add for an early December visit (just for DH and I since DS heads off to college this fall :teeth: ). (Though, DH thinks we have enough points already :teeth: )

I think if you are not fussy about where you stay or it is not possible to book at the 11month point, then it doesn't matter where your points are. If you have a favorite, my way of thinking is you can't go wrong with some points to cover your favorite location.

Good luck with your decision.
