Squirrels, Ducks and Coconut Butts!!! A Wish Trip Report *LATEST UPDATE 05/2011**

I'm so sad that the day turned out totally like you had not planned- and not so much fun (in the evening) as you had hoped! You are right, I guess we all have to make our priorties, and then be flexible enough to change them if we're "not feeling it". But by then, I gather it was too late.

Dr. Suess looks really fun for the little ones. Someday, it'd be fun to take my kids there.

Sorry to hear the last day and especially the party didn't meet expectations. Poor Tessa, who always looks so animated, looks absolutely bored by Santa!

We've talked about your possible move before, so I just wanted to say that if it's what you want I hope it comes through for you all :goodvibes

WOW What awsome photos. That's too bad about Christmas at GKTW....but it looks like you had a lot of other great moments.

Somehow or another with the all of the hustle and bustle of kids, I fell four pages behind. I love all of the Magic Kingdom pictures. Phoebe's and Tessa's expressions tell the whole story. It brought tears to my eyes to see them so happy. I am so glad you had a do-over day. Also, there are never too many pictures of kids with the fairies. I think my report contained even more.

I am so glad you were able to get Phoebe's tests done. I know it must be frustrating not to have a definite answer to what is going on.

I loved the pictures of Utah and the wedding. It looks like you and your family were able to have a fun summer trip together.

As for the blow-out at Sesame Street Live, I think we have all been there. I showed up at a birthday party this weekend with my youngest in just a diaper. We went to change her in the car and she blew through everything. She had to borrow clothes from her cousin.

Thank you so much for sharing your family's trip with us. I love your attention to detail and the great eye you have for taking photos!:banana::banana:

Aw! I hate that the Christmas Party was not awesome for you guys!

But you are right...Good advice - to do what you know you need to do at the time and not try to push a certain thing that seemed like a good idea in your mind. That is something I am learning slowly but surely. :rolleyes1

Awesome pics! And you have done a GREAT job telling the stories!

I don't want this one to end!

For anyone who is not already my Facebook friend, this was my update yesterday:
Tessa's middle name is Mischief! She ate a Hershey bar, frosting and sprinkles for breakfast. Found a secret stash of play-doh which is now ALL over the house. Found my secret stash of mini toys (think polly pocket shoes) which are now all over the house. Played in my make up. Drank half of my diet Coke. Spilled bubbles on the carpet. Emptied out my conditioner in the bathtub. Shoved t.p. down the sink drain. When she was getting in trouble for some of it she spit (not at me, but still) and I sent her to her room for a looooooong time. When I went to talk to her about it she said "I'm sorry I broke your heart" which almost DID break my heart until she started laughing hysterically.

Me either! :) I had never heard anyone who went to it say that it wasn't great. Jennifer had the moment when Santa got down on the floor, Amber loved it because her family is always separated at Cmas, there was always something special about it, in the stories I heard. I was expecting it to be special for us too, which I why I ruined it. That's okay, a couple of hours wasted was not a big deal in the big picture.

Thanks Kristin! I love how many photos you had in your TR. It is quite a project, but it is so much fun sharing it with people who know what you're talking about, or are about to!

WOW What awsome photos. That's too bad about Christmas at GKTW....but it looks like you had a lot of other great moments.

We definitely did. The whole trip over all was amazing. I had to stop expecting every hour to be special. :rotfl:

Yeah, you can tell by Tessa's expression that she is just barely tolerating being there.
Thanks again for your help with the MI info. I will keep you posted on any news.

It was fun, but I think U.S. holds more promise for the families with bigger kids. (Unless the little ones are Harry Potter fans, now).

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Wow! now you have something great to throw at her when she gets older!! (meaning the story) :rotfl::rotfl:

Melissa,

that update about Tessa is too funny. Get into trouble much, Tessa? That girl is full of life, you can say that much for her!

Somehow I missed at least one, if not two, updates from you. I guess I've been slacking on the disboards. You know, about the Christmas party, my kids really didn't get all that much out of some portions of it either. They did enjoy meeting Santa Claus -- we were there earlier, as you mentioned, which is KEY in my mind. And we still had to wait longer than I thought we could keep Elke entertained for. But as for the rest, my kids are a little on the shy side, so no one really felt comfortable enough to interact with the parade characters, etc, and/or dance with them at the end. We did truly enjoy the decorations around GKTW, and the carriage ride around the village was also cool. But the "party" and parade later on was not their cup of tea. So yes, I'm glad we were there and we did do things they truly enjoyed, but I think you make a really good point that families must be open to the fact that what other people rave about may not be something their family enjoys quite as much.

We had one of our best days on this trip at the Animal Kingdom. But I have heard many others say their families have not had anywhere near as good a time there. So your advice is spot on, I think. As much as we all like to plan on this board, parents should be ready, willing and able to change plans if things are not "working" for their family. To be flexible. And to realize that there may be something that other families have seemingly universally raved about that just doesn't do it for their family. And, most importantly, that there's nothing wrong with them, their family or their planning if something just doesn't work out. Take it as an experience and move on, reformulating plans if necessary.

Universal/IOA is another one where people differ quite widely on their experiences. If I had had the benefit of hindsight, I would not have spent a day there on our trip. It just wasn't a good fit for our girls. The overall atmosphere of the place wasn't as "comfortable" for Elke as was Disney, and the options for rides for her were much more limited. BUT, she did LOVE the One Fish, Two Fish ride. Her absolute favorite, unfortunately, because she got me pretty wet!

Hope things are going okay with Phoebe. Sorry I have been a disboards slackers. Summer is actually more involved for me, as the kids are out of school and I"m ferrying them around all day, or so it seems!

I've started looking over the GKTW schedule and the Christmas party was one thing that I didn't want to miss. I am so sorry it wasn't great for you guys. Maybe because you got there on the later side? It sounds like you need to be there early to see Santa then head out to enjoy the party.

How far is US from GKTW? I'm trying to figure out a schedule for our trip and I wonder if US is even worth it for Juliana. I'm sure I would like it there but this trip isn't about me.

Every time I see pictures of the stars I get choked up. It is amazing that so many kids have had to stay at GKTW. What a wonderful place. :wizard:

I think by the time they are teenagers, your VERY existence will be the source of their embarrassemnt- and it will be soooooooooo sweet!

I love this trip report...I've spent the last 3 days reading every bit of it. Even all 50 pages of the pre-trip report! My DD who is 4 has been ooh and awwwing over the pics of your beautiful girls. Can't wait to see more.

Melissa-I have a question. Could you share with me where you get Phoebe's necklaces? My son suffers from ADHD (he is 8 but reminds be a TON of Tessa...:lmao:) and he chews up the collars of his shirts. We've done chewy tubes but I believe the necklaces would be very handy and they look very thick and durable. Thanks!

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Wow! now you have something great to throw at her when she gets older!! (meaning the story) :rotfl::rotfl:

Oh, I have volumes of these stories!!!

Oh my goodness what a busy girl that Tessa is! :rotfl2:

Busy is a nice word for it. I tell ya, she better turn out to be an Olympic athlete or discover the cure for cancer!

Melissa,

Glad to know we weren't the only ones who weren't totally in love with Christmas, although your night sounds better than ours. :sad2:

We had one of our best days on this trip at the Animal Kingdom. But I have heard many others say their families have not had anywhere near as good a time there. So your advice is spot on, I think. Yep, absolutely! If/when we go back I will be much better prepared to make alternate plans when needed. I decided before we left that AK was not a priority for us, because of Phoebe's vision. The most common raves about that park are about the atmosphere and the safari ride, which would be lost on Phoebe. And I doubt she would have enjoyed the few rides they have there.

Universal/IOA is another one where people differ quite widely on their experiences. If I had had the benefit of hindsight, I would not have spent a day there on our trip. I'm glad we went and experienced US/IOA but they were definitely not all day parks for us. I probably wouldn't spend the money until the girls are much older.

Hope things are going okay with Phoebe. Sorry I have been a disboards slackers. Summer is actually more involved for me, as the kids are out of school and I"m ferrying them around all day, or so it seems!

I totally get it! We have 22 days left until Phoebe starts. "It's the most wonderful time of the year!".:lmao:

That would definitely be the best plan if you guys do that one!

How far is US from GKTW? I'm trying to figure out a schedule for our trip and I wonder if US is even worth it for Juliana. I'm sure I would like it there but this trip isn't about me.

It's not much farther than Disney is. If I remember correctly it's about 20 mins. She would probably enjoy the Seuss area of IOA, and there are a few fun rides in US. You can combine the two and just do one day (kid rides only) or you can do half days, spending the morning or evening at GKTW. If you do skip it, don't feel bad. I learned my lesson on doing what everyone else says is great. :rolleyes1

Every time I see pictures of the stars I get choked up. It is amazing that so many kids have had to stay at GKTW. What a wonderful place. :wizard:

I thought I would lose it while we did her star, but I was okay until after the trip. Now when I look at them I get very sentimental.

Hey we met the same belle she was nice.

I really liked her too. I was happy we got to see her twice. :goodvibes

I think by the time they are teenagers, your VERY existence will be the source of their embarrassemnt- and it will be soooooooooo sweet!

So true!

I love this trip report...I've spent the last 3 days reading every bit of it. Even all 50 pages of the pre-trip report! My DD who is 4 has been ooh and awwwing over the pics of your beautiful girls. Can't wait to see more.

Thanks Christy! I can't believe you read the PTR too!!!

She got her "chew toys" as we call them, from school. They gave her one because she was grinding her teeth when she was tired/bored. Then the new teacher decided she shouldn't be dependent on it so tried taking it away and now she will chew on her shirt if it's not on. It is a very durable toy though. Abilitations.com has the "grabber" (looks like a P or b),
http://store.schoolspecialtyonline....e.jsp?section=28539&item=84307&minisite=10206
as well as chewelry.
http://store.schoolspecialtyonline....e.jsp?section=28539&item=84721&minisite=10206
I just saw these and thought about getting one for Phoebe...

I think Tessa needs one too. You're right - your son sounds like Tessa. ;)

ARGH!!!! I was at least 10-15 pics into this update when all of a sudden it's disappeared! I'm sure it has nothing to do with the Limoncello Martini I'm sipping! :lmao: Needless to say, I'm feeling a little less chatty than I was an hour ago when I started this. So, here we go again!

Our final day of the Wish Trip! Tim and Tessa took off early as usual and got to meet Scooby and Shaggy in the castle.

ScoobyDoo41a.jpg

Phoebe slept in late as usual, and I started packing. It was sad to pack up all the Big Give outfits we'd received because we didn't get to wear them all once our schedule was so unexpectedly overturned! I figured we could keep those clothes in one bag that wouldn't have to be taken in to the hotels we were staying at the next week. We also had a big duffle of GKTW gifts to take home, which also was going to stay in the rental overnights. Thankfully, we had used half (or more) of the case of pull ups so we had a little more room from those.

Phoebe and I had snacks for breakfast in the villa and then Tim took the girls to the playground one last time. He took video instead of pics so I don't know how to share those, but they certainly enjoyed it. Once I had everything packed and the place was cleaned out we stopped at the office for one last thing. I went in to check out and they gave me info on who to send thank you notes to (haven't done them yet, but going to!!!) and a passport to get into almost every amusement park on the planet for free during the next year.
They also gave me the "coordinates" of Phoebe's star, so I headed over to the castle next to snap a pic of it on the wall.
IMG_1029.jpg

It ended up being placed right over the window that looks out to the carousel!
IMG_1028.jpg

We also learned later that our new friend Elke was just above and to the left of Phoebe.
IMG_1023a.jpg

As I walked back toward the office I took a pic of the beautiful fountain.
IMG_1030.jpg

I was told that it was a gift to the angels who volunteer here. How appropriate!

I ran into Ann and family on my way out of the office and we chatted for a couple of minutes. Her husband told me about the time he lived in Charleston and it got me very excited for the next leg of our trip! We all walked to the parking lot and the kids stuck their heads in the truck to say goodbye to Tessa and Phoebe. They were extending their trip also, but heading over to the Animal Kingdom Lodge. I wish we had snapped a photo of all of us, but my group was all buckled up. Oh well. It was so fun getting to know them, and conveniently crossing paths with them so many times.

We arrived at Epcot around 12:30. We wandered around the front part of the park for a little while. We were greeted by topiaries for the Flower and Garden Festival.
IMG_1036.jpg

There was also a Photopass photographer ready and waiting to capture a few more shots of us in front of the famous Epcot icon...
Image0264.jpg

Image0271.jpg

Image0273.jpg

Tessa was a good sport in posing for the Tinkerbell shots. We told her that if she held her hands that way, Tink just might land on her. Once the photographer took the shot we exclaimed how Tink had just fluttered by! Tessa looked at us like she couldn't decide if we were crazy or if a magic moment had just happened and she missed it. When I finished editing the Photopass and Tink was added in, I showed her the shots and she was very excited!

We went inside and wandered around Innoventions (east or west?) and played with some of the science experiments. Phoebe quickly decided that this was not for her, with the loud banging and the strange equipment looming around, so I took her out and we visited Mousegears. Amazingly I didn't buy a single thing there, but it WAS a pretty cool store. Tim and Tessa met us a little while later and we wandered around some more. We went to Club Cool, where we lured Tessa into trying Beverly, of course.
IMG_1042.jpg

We didn't think the girls would go for the rides in that part so we were basically headed straight for World Showcase. Along the way we saw a Butterfly Garden.
IMG_1044.jpg

IMG_1061.jpg

And a fairy garden.
IMG_1068.jpg

IMG_1071.jpg

It was really pretty.
IMG_1073.jpg

IMG_1075.jpg

IMG_1077.jpg

Next to that was a little area devoted to Tiana and supposed to look like the Bayou. I thought it looked a little thrown together, compared to the fairy garden, but it did have some neat details.
IMG_1080.jpg

We continued over to World Showcase where we were greeted by this topiary.
IMG_1081.jpg

As we entered into the World Showcase Tessa saw some ducks around the lake and ran off in pursuit of some interaction with them.
IMG_1083.jpg

I was really starting to wonder if she would have enjoyed a week at a city park as much as the amusement parks. She was thrilled at every duck and squirrel sighting. We had to pry her away from the lake in order to start our trek around the world.

We turned right and headed counter clockwise, entering Canada first.
IMG_1086.jpg

We didn't stop for anything in Canada and continued straight to the UK. We were hungry for lunch but wanted to eat light and save room for sampling lots of different countries. We decided on one tray of fish and chips to share. It was very hot and very greasy, so it was difficult to get bites off for Phoebe but it was good.

Ever since the first sighting at GKTW, Tessa has been on the lookout to see Mary Poppins again. Luckily, she was greeting guests as we wandered through her homeland. Tessa was a little shy at first, but she definitely wanted to talk to her. This Mary Poppins seemed a little too stuffy to me. I know MP is very proper, but she is also warm and and kind, which this person just didn't quite master it. The girls didn't seem to notice.
IMG_1095.jpg

IMG_1097.jpg

IMG_1100.jpg

I think it was Mary who made the comment to Phoebe (someone at WS did) that they liked her pretty dress. I was surprised that they thought it was a dress, because it's very short but I guess they couldn't see her shorts underneath. I made a note to myself to pair the long shirts with long shorts in the future.

We stopped to get a Kim Possible Kimunciator for Tessa to do a mission. She had no idea what we were doing with it until after a few of the tasks were complete.
IMG_1109.jpg

Continuing on to France, we stopped for a Photopass pic.
Image0275.jpg

Tessa and Tim were searching for something that Kim had asked them to find while Phoebe and I waited in the line for a Grey Goose slushie. The acrobats came out while we were waiting and did their act with the chairs. (Sorry, didn't get pics of that, my hands were full!)
IMG_1107.jpg

Tim had said he didn't want a drink but when I got to the counter I couldn't decide between the Grey Goose (lemon) slush or the Grand Marnier (orange) slush. So I decided to get Tim one anyway so I could try both.
IMG_1108.jpg

Apparently I liked the Grand Marnier better, because it was quickly disappearing as we waited for them to meet back up with us.

Continuing into Morocco we were looking for the spot to meet Jasmine. We went into a store and asked about it and they said "any minute". Tim noticed a henna artist in the store and asked Tessa if she wanted a tattoo. I think it was $20 for a few inches on her arm. They told her not to touch it for something like half an hour while it dried. Yeah right! It didn't last that long, but it was long enough for the color to stain for about a week or so.
IMG_1114.jpg

We hung out in the alcove where Jasmine was supposed to be coming out at any minute. I was kind of excited for the girls to meet her, as I have always been one to root for the underdog and I feel like Jasmine is one of the "less popular" princesses. We waited for about 15-20 minutes when a photographer walked up to us and said it would be 20 minutes before she came out because she had just started her break. I don't know how long their breaks are, of if she visits any other sites, but I thought it was weird since we had already been in that spot for over 15. We decided it was not worth waiting around any longer for and headed off to see more of the world. Phoebe had fallen asleep while we were waiting.
IMG_1119.jpg

As we approached Japan Tessa saw the Koi pond and got excited. She quickly picked up this rock, intending to throw it in and watch the splash!
IMG_1120.jpg

Of course we stopped her. She watched the fish for a minute but decided they weren't nearly as interesting if they couldn't be put in mortal danger.
IMG_1121.jpg

Now this is the part where I get really embarrassed. I was raised in a city that is highly Asian in population. I feel pretty confident in being able to tell people apart, in terms of what country they or their family are from. I can tell you the difference between a Lin and a Nguyen. I can even pronounce Nguyen! My best friend for a couple of years in HS was half Japanese and he taught me many aspects of that culture. I'm not saying I deserve a prize or anything, but you can imagine my horror when I realized I was in Japan, asking the hostess outside the restaurant "Where can we find MULAN????". Are you kidding me???? What an idiot! Thankfully the very sweet hostess didn't seem to be offended at all and kindly pointed in the direction of CHINA. Ugh.

So, we continue on around the world and as we approach the U.S.A. they have a very big, very loud band playing out in front. Phoebe was still sleeping at this point so I run off around the crowd to get past the band while Tessa and Tim linger behind to enjoy it.

Next stop was Italy. Boring to Tim and torture for me. He lived in Rome and Naples for a couple of years before we met. His mom offered to buy us plane tickets there for our honeymoon and then backed out when his brother got engaged the same year because she couldn't afford the same type of gift for them as well. I understand, but I can't say I'm not bitter! I had travel guides and maps and my heart was set on seeing Italy. I fully intend to go there for some extensive travel someday....
IMG_1126.jpg

IMG_1127.jpg

We decided to make masks here at the Kidcot Fun Stop.
IMG_1129.jpg

While they were coloring we talked with the parents of another girl there, who were very interested in Phoebe, and shared that they had a son with severe disabilities who had passed. They were thrilled that we were there on her wish trip and they were very sweet with her.

We debated eating Italian for dinner but the restaurant there looked pretty nice and we knew the kids were getting tired and not likely to still and quiet. We did stop in a store to get a taste of Italy in liquid form. I had a sample of Rosa Regale and Tim had a shot of Limoncello. Both items we can get at the store at home, but they sounded good at the time. Having only had small samples we were still craving something a little more substantial. We saw a stand selling gelato and such and decided to get a snack here. We shared a smoothie type drink they called a Primavera (means springtime in Italian) and another drink called a Margarita, but I remember it was not like a Mexican Margarita. I don't remember what WAS in it though.

Continuing into Germany Tessa saw the miniature village and was quite enthralled with it.
IMG_1132.jpg

We saw a family restroom nearby and decided to take advantage of the convenience. You have heard some of our potty war stories, so you understand this was no small task, but we were back on the road soon enough. We were hungry again and decided to give some German food a try. Tim and I both have German ancestry and I had made reservations at the Biergarten originally, which were for several days ago and obviously cancelled. Instead of sitting down in Germany we decided to make it faster and share a bratwurst and sausage, pretzels and drinks and eat out in the courtyard by the cookoo clock.

After our snack we came upon a small group waiting to see Snow White and the Photopass person invited us to cut the line. Snow was very nice with the girls and once Tessa got talking she didn't want to stop.
Image0284.jpg

Image0290.jpg

Image0287.jpg

Image0292.jpg

We continued on our way and wandered in to China. Perfect timing, as we saw Mulan coming out to greet people and we were first in line. No Photopass photographer with her though, but I was able to get some good smiles. Phoebe really liked Mulan's robe and she was a good sport about letting her pay with it.
IMG_1135.jpg

IMG_1138.jpg

This was the final destination of Tessa's Kim Possible Mission so she and Tim went from location to location on their quest while Phoebe and I meandered around and enjoyed the beauty.
IMG_1146.jpg

IMG_1139.jpg

When we got to Norway we decided the kids needed a little adrenaline rush and we found the Maelstrom. I thought it was funny that Tim got pretty nervous when the boat went backwards. I guess since I knew it did that it didn't phase me. We met another Wish family on the ride, mom Michelle and her family. I think she said she is a lurker here, so HI!!! if you are reading this. Tessa wanted to go again so Tim took her one more time while I found a restroom for Phoebe. We were pretty hungry for dinner at this point and we saw on the map that the only country left after Norway was Mexico. We live in Mexico, pretty much. We both grew up in So CA, lived in Texas and Arizona. We can have good Mexican, authentic Mexican, any time we want. We did not want to eat in Mexico. So unless we backtracked, we needed to eat in Norway. We found the bakery and looked at the display to see what was appetizing. I ordered a club sandwich for Tessa and I. It didn't feel terribly Norwegian but oh well. I can't remember what Tim and Phoebe ate.
IMG_1151.jpg

We also tried some desserts, which were decidedly more authentic. School bread, a strawberry rice dessert and a chocolate pudding with gummy worm for Tessa.
IMG_1150.jpg

There was a squirrel running around the patio gathering food from under the tables. Tessa was enthralled with the little guy and we figured we were in a casual enough environment we could let her run around a little bit and chase him. She actually touched him one time!
IMG_1148.jpg

We still had to fight with her to get her to eat, and bargain with her to earn her dessert, but it wasn't her worst mealtime ever. A man approached Tim and told him that he is a child psychologist and he was very impressed with how we handled her. We had a good laugh after the man left. It seems we are approached by people who make comments like this on a somewhat regular basis. Which makes me wonder, if we are such great parents, how come we are attracting all this attention every where we go?

After dinner we headed back out toward the exit and Tessa found some more Disney celebrities to interact with.
IMG_1157.jpg

Phoebe even got a kick out of these guys.

It was nearing 8pm and we needed to get to the airport to pick up "auntie Heather" for the next portion of our trip. A couple shots of the iconic symbols as we head out.

Great update! :thumbsup2

The picture of all the stars at GKTW was really beautiful and touching! What a blessing they are for so many families!

I love your park pics! Just gorgeous! It looks like you all enjoyed touring WS and had a lot of fun! :goodvibes

Looking forward to hearing about the 2nd leg of your journey! popcorn::

I love the update. Both girls were able to interact with many princesses. The Mulan pictures are great! I would not have waited any longer for Jasmine either! We have people come up to us all of the time with Tyler and tell us we are handling him well too. Maybe people are trying to be nice??? I am so glad that you had a good experience at Epcot. Thank you for sharing the squirrel stories and all of the pictures. They are so wonderful!:banana::banana:
