Spring Break in Chicago - Would I be safe with my daughter?

Hyde Park? I'm in that area often for school, and may I add, late at night. I haven't had any problems.

There's some sketchy parts. It has gotten better in the past years, but I don't think a mom and her daughter need to be touring the steets there late at night.

We would be taking the train so the schedule says 8 hours. We have a portable DVD player so that should help pass the time.... maybe a trip to the dining car, too!

If you are taking Amtrak don't expect much from the dining car..... sandwiches and cookies, nachos, chips stuff like that. Pop that sort of thing. There is no "dining service" like there used to be in the old days.

Really? I was going to drive from detroit to Minneapolis, but I thought is was a 15 hour or so drive...but since Chicago is only a four hour drive from here, I guess I'm looking at more like 10-12 hours.

That sounds about right. I checked map quest and it is about 690 miles so it would depend on the speed limits but at 65 mph that would be about 10 hours. Factor in some rush hour and potty stops and you are at about 12 hours or so.

Here are some links I have posted in the past for others coming to the city, hope they help...................

This may sound stupid, but I've never even taken a cab alone..... how far are the museums from the main area of Chicago?

as someothers have also mentioned, if you are staying downtown, there are trolleys and buses to the sites.

It is also as safe as you make it, so keep your personal items light and out-a-sight. I have lived here my whole life, and been to all parts of the city at different times of day and night, but as you would at home, know your surrondings and and you will be OK.

Hope you have fun while you are visiting Chicago.

I haven't checked this post in a few days.... Thanks everyone! I will check out the links. I'm disappointed about the dining car.
