Spray Painting Laminate Countertops? - UPDATE Post 34!

Hey there --- I've used the stone-look spray paint, pretty much every variety, for a number of projects, including some that had sealed topcoats --- it will absolutely still have a texture. Which, if it were me, I wouldn't let anywhere near my counters, because OH, the nightmare of trying to keep cleanish.

No matter how careful you are with cutting boards, etc, a certain amount of food will end up on the counters --- if that food happens to be raw chicken juice you want to be able to clean it up handily.

I would do the sand, primer, roll on version, with ragging or sponging or dragging to create the desired look - then at LEAST two coats of poly.

One thought would be to get the stuff you want to use and a chunk of masonite (cheap, lumber section of Home Depot/Lowes) and test out your technique a couple times before going "live".

My parents did exactly what you're talking about doing. They sealed it but it always stayed very bumpy and rough. They were not happy with the way it held up. Or rather, how it didn't hold up.

They've just replaced the countertop and my mom was so happy to see that painted laminate go!

i did mine this year. got a piece of laminate from a friend and experimented with different paints. tried the spray it looked good but too bumpy and i just wanted solid black, tried the hammered look, was too gray. so i sanded first, put 3 coats of dutch boy paint (walmart) and 3 coats of poly. started with tan colored countertops and i am going to try to post pics. so far i have been very happy with the results and the price. i do use a cutting board or even a towel to sit hot stuff on it. and my crock pot left 3 little circles where the legs of it sat while hot so i just put it on the stove top now when i use it. i also sponged some browns and grays on my trial piece and it was beautiful, just wouldn't work though for what i wanted. i will eventually get new countertops but this was cheap and i enjoyed doing it.

LOL Cruise, and sadly that's probably the least disney decorated room, it all just makes me happy :goodvibes

DH has been in construction for 20+ yrs (13 of which were custom kitchens) he said dont do it. laminate counter tops are cheep at home depot & lowes.

DH and I are remodeling our bath (almost done, can't wait to post before/after pics) and couldn't find a laminate counter in a color that we liked, and real stone was out of our budget. So dh cut a peice of plywood to fit the counter, glued a wood veneer(sp?) over it, then painted it to look like marble, then put several clear top coats over it. Looks fantastic!!!! I can't remember what we spent but it wasn't much. He's cutting the hole for the sink today, I'll try to post some pictures if I can find the camera.

For a bathroom, maybe. For a kitchen, no way. Think of all the chemicals that you are putting in your kitchen, and your food that you're going to be putting ON TOP of that. Can't be healthy.

I'm all for repainting stuff, but I wouldn't. Besides the durability (or lack of) and health concerns, you'd really have to either remove them or tape EVRYTHING around it to make sure you don't accidently paint your cupboards. New laminate counters are REALLY cheap at Menards or Lowes if you choose one of their basic colors that are already in the store in stock sizes. You could cut to fit your space. We did custom-fit and color laminates in our old house before we sold it and that price wasn't bad either. I want to say only a couple hundred for a large chunk of counter space.

I did not read the previous posts.

I do know that if you can get your hands on melamine paint, that it is VERY durable on counters and not a prob for food safety (you can eat off of melamine plates). I know you can buy it in Canada, but I'm not sure if I've ever seen it here in the US.

Just completed these. We have alot of countertop in our kitchen including a custom size peninsula. It is expensive for us to replace even with formica. This cost me about $125 for the entire kitchen.

You can see our entire project step by step here.

UPDATE - Well, I decided against the spray paint. But I did purchase the product a previous poster mentioned - Giani Granite Paint for Countertops. You start with a black primer, then sponge on three shades of minerals, and finally cover with two coats of sealant. I started on Thursday and finished last night. I love the results! :lovestruc My counters look a hundred times better! I was so tired of the yellow counters. I used to have yellow walls too, but since I painted a few months back, the counters were really sticking out. Here are some before and after photos:

I am thrilled with the results! I just hope they will hold up. Since the paints were specifically made for counters, I am fairly confident they will. All supplies cost around $60. :thumbsup2

Wow! Those look really good. I have never even heard of this type of product. I have tan tops that look just like yours did and they are still in really good shape but I really wanted a change, this might just be the trick and let me hold on a little longer until I can really re-do the whole kitchen! thanks so much for sharing pics.

WOW! They look GREAT! what a great mini fix up it made a major difference! Congtatulations!
