Lesson learned....don't stand on a foot that has fallen asleep.:sad2: I leave in less than two weeks with a 2nd degree ankle sprain. I am nervous it won't be up to par for this trip. By the time we leave it will be 3 weeks since it happened. Right now I can walk on it but it is major SORE! Long periods standing or walking aren't happening at the moment. I am praying it will get better or at least fairly better that I can deal with it with an ace bandage. If not, AHHHHH! Does Disney have wheelchairs or those scooters??? I really don't want to spend my vacation in a chair but at this rate I will do anything to make sure we have fun!! What a bummmer! I just want to cry! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle this?

Yes they have wheelchair and ECV's. Most of the lines are accessible so you will wait in the same line.

Ol timer's scooters? some of us that use them every day don't really appreciate that.
anyway yes they have them and they are not cheap to rent, nor are you guaranteed one, they go fast.
You can order a wheelchair or scooter from a local company delivered to your hotel for the length of your stay. But IF you think you may go the scooter route, then go now to a supermarket and use a scooter there, practice driving it, including stopping and turning around and getting through tight areas AND BACKING UP. and realize people will stop in front of you and turn right into you etc. so be prepared.

Hi and :welcome: to disABILTIES!

If you click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. The third from the top item is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information, including where people rent ECVs.

ECVs can be hard to manipulate, so i would practice at a grocery store first. a wheelchair you get at disney will be heavy so someone else will have to push you. lines are mainstreamed, so you will rarely have to enter a different way.

i know you didn't mean anything by it, but just a kind word of warning - I would use care not to call scooters "ole timers scooters." it can be seen as rude by those of us facing permanent declining mobility (i am only 22). i know you are simply frustrated by being injured, but see this as a lesson of what those of us with mobility impairments and disabilities go through every day.

Oh no I didn't mean anything by it. Just only see people my Grandmothers age here using them. :confused3

Thanks for the advise. I would hate to rent it and not need it. It stinks!! Maybe I will hold out another week and see where this goes. Maybe I will get lucky! It is VERY frustrating.

Great advise on the store use. I hadn't thought of that! I will have to try it. I did go grocery shopping last night and regreted it today. I will have to try it there.

Thanks so much for the help! At least I feel a little relief knowing I have a back up.

Off to check the FAQ and change my old timer.............;)

My advice is, even if you're feeling a bit better but not fully recovered, you might want to look into getting a wheelchair anyway. There's no sense in pushing yourself so hard that you end up damaging your ankle even more. All right, touring Disney in a chair isn't ideal, given the choice I'm sure none of us would ask for it, but it's not that bad and it's better than being miserable and in pain for the whole trip. Disney is wonderfully accessible and all the CMs I've met are very friendly and helpful.

K has recently started a thread on wheeling Disney for first timers, which you might benifit from (heed the suncream warning!):

Other than that, familiarise yourself with the relevant stuff in the FAQ, use whatever assistance you need to enjoy your holiday and have a great time! :thumbsup2

I broke my ankle at Thanksgiving and we had a trip to WDW scheduled for Jan.2. Even though I was out of my cast in time and walking fine with an ankle brace, i still rented a scooter from Randy's. Best money I ever spent! Even using the scooter, my ankle was about twice it's size every evening and needed icing. And by renting it from an off-campus company I had the scooter for my use at the hotel, which was really a foot-saver.
