I'm in charge of the sports banquet at school. We just started having school sports this year. We had co-ed soccer, girls volleyball and boys basketball. At the end of basketball, there will be a 'banquet' for all the athletes, coaches and whomever else is deemed worthy, lol, of attending. As it is our first, I was thinking about a pizza buffet(delivery) with salad(parents) and brownies(parents). We don't have a bunch of cash as our boosters group just got going and other groups keep filching the concession at our games for their issues-another thread! :( Some of the parents think every child should get a trophy or medal; I am absolutely against that as these kids are 12-14 and not 4. A certificate might be ok. Do coaches give awards normally? What happens at a school sponsored sports banquet? Help!!!

Our middle school doesn't do awards banquets. But our high school does.

We have fall, winter, and spring sports banquets. I personally have only attended fall.
Fall included, football, cheer, cross country, and volleyball. Drill does their own thing at the end of the year.

Ours was catered by a BBQ company, same one every year. Athletes are free, parents and guests pay $7 each.

Certificates are given, nothing bigger. They sometimes show a slideshow.

Booster parents would make the center pieces for the tables, this came out of parents pocket for money not booster money. It was usually something small and cute. Last year was wood cut outs that Dads cut out in the shape of the different balls and cross country wings and then moms painted them and a few balloons were attached.

Hope this helps some.

Thanks Justanopinion! This is exactly the kind of information I need. I was thinking we'd just have the athletes but asking parents and guests to pay is a better idea. Someone mentioned charms to me, girls could put them on a bracelet, guys wear them on a chain. Interesting idea. Anyone else have input?

Our middle school has sports banquets each season. Everyone who participated is invited to the banquet. It is usually about $10/person and most parents and sometimes siblings attend. We usually have chicken, italian beefs, pasta, salad and desserts. It also includes drinks (pop & water). Ours is held in the gym/lunchroom at the school and is served buffet style.

For our banquets the coach gives a certificate to each person on the team. They get called up sport by sport (cross country, football, cheerleading, etc) They then have trophies for top boy or girl on the team and another for the most imporved or hardest worker.

My DD's cross country banquet is this week. DD is a freshman, so this is my first bnaquet. I LOVE what they do, and this coach has been coaching for 14 years, and started off with 2 runners, she is up to 40 runners with an assistant coach.

Everyone attending pays $5. This covers the subs and paper products. The assistant coach apparently makes an awesome chili. Then everything gets divided by grade level: EAch freshman brings about enough soda for 15 people, Sophomores get to sign up for chili fixin's (i.e. sourcream, cheese, onions etc) and the rest of the sophomores bring various salads. Juniors bring chips/dip and seniors bring desserts.

Any additional money gets donated to a local food bank, last year's donation was $180.:goodvibes

This banquet is specifically for the girls cross country team.

The girls have voted on the awards, (and I was very impressed with how much thought DD put into her choices) for things like - the spirit award, the best motivator, a special "for Seniors only" etc. I'm sorry, I just don't recall the specific awards. It was probably about 5 or 6 different awards, clearly based on specific criteria.

I have a coworker (different school) whose DD's (also a freshman) volleyball banquet was at a nice buffet place, and each person attending was charged $16. Ouch. I thought that was really pricey.

Having attended many, many sports banquets here is the gamut of what was done:

one school had an all sports banquet, catered in the school cafeteria with an awards ceremony for MVP, MIP in the auditorium.

one school had individual team banquets at a nice restaurant, coaches talked about the season, handed out awards to some of the kids-kids that got letters (high school) then various awards like MVP, MIP, coaches award, etc. Usually the team captains had some fun awards to hand out--usually funny things that happened during the season

another type of banquet-pot luck, each class year brought part of the meal--freshmen bring salad, sophomores bring main dish, etc. Very casual, held in the school cafeteria. Coach and captains hand out awards like above. These have always been my favorite--casual, relaxing, fun.
