Disney is sending emails prompting me to order 2 sets of magic bands for òur upcoming split stay in February. Shouldn't there only be one set per trip? Both reservations are on MDE and I thought were linked??
Any guidance with this is much appreciated, this whole process is new and quite confusing.

I posted this on the theme park board but then thought that this reservation being DVC and CRO might need feedback/expertise from DVC members.

I can tell you our experience. We have a split stay with a points reservation at the same resort stuck in the middle. We had to order 3 sets (and the points reservation is one night). The reservations at the same resort are linked also. This all may be a temporary thing until they are able to work out all the kinks of magic bands.

You can order different colors!

We also received 2 sets of MBs for a recent split stay. I do not believe Disney currently has the software set up to recognize that a particular reservation is part of a continuing stay.

That said, all the MBs are connected to your MDW account and all will work. I just ordered different colors so that I would have a choice each day, LOL. (I am not partial to the generic gray they use as a default if you do not customize).

AFAIK, the plan going forward is for guests to bring back their MBs for future visits. Off site visitors will have to pay for MBs. It's possible that on-site visitors who lose their bands will also have to pay for a replacement if they do not want to use the KTTW cards.

I'd just go ahead and customize both sets and not worry about it. If you don't, you'll probably just get the one set you do order and then find a set of gray MBs waiting for you at one of the resorts. Nothing wrong with gray, but you may want different colors for the different members of your party so that you can easily tell them apart.

I have had many offers to order MB's...we have had 5 different resort stays since October, and 5 different resort stays in January.( Different groups of people with us, different experiences!:goodvibes)I have ignored all requests since my October band still works. They do have grey bands waiting for us at check ins. What a waste, unless Disney can use those for others!

I do not even care to mention the hard things I get in postal mail! Gee whiz, I try hard not to worry about stuff going into landfills!

If you ignore the customization requests and they have the grey ones at check-in, do they have the travel party names printed on them? In which they can't be reused anyway. Or do they not customize them at all?

They are no names on the ones waiting at the desk. They will likely write the names with a sharpie after setting it up.

Both sets of bands will work, order different colors and enjoy.

Big bonus to split stays is that as of right now you can pull paper FP with all sets of room keys for your entire trip. We had a triple split and the last 3 days of our trip we were able to pull FP with all 3 sets of keys, plus our APs as well as use our FP+

I have a spilt stay coming in February too. They say all the bans will work with all the reservations on all of them. However I was wondering if I can add more fast passes to the second set or are they assigned to the first set too.

Thanks!

No, you don't get two sets of FPs. Bands will be interchangeable for same set of FPs.

Wow, that's a bonus. I am a bit confused though because I thought the magic bands actually replaced your room keys? Why do you have any room keys at all?

But as I understand, by the end of January room keys will not be given at any resort.

Actually, when we went in December we had customized our MB's and received them in the mail. When we checked in at BWV the girl handed us another box with 2 gray MB's, but our names were on them. I ended up throwing them away when we got home.

Log into (or create) your my disney experience account and link your reservation to it. See what options you have.

My understanding is that they are giving room keys as back up to the MBs since they remain glitchy...

I didn't ask for room keys, they were just handed to me.

Same for us at BWV last December. However, the room keys had the RFID chip and those will not work in the legacy FP machines.

In November when we were there we did receive the room keys as well with our magic bands. However we were told that they were going to stop handing out KTTW cards and it would all be the magic bands by early (Jan/Feb) 2014.

Unfortunately they also explained that they CANNOT re-use the gray bands that are provided at check-in. They "prepare" those ahead of time and they are waiting on you at the desk. The CMs politely said that unfortunately there is no way to "recycle" them, they encouraged a few people just to take them because there was nothing they could do with them.

Returned from our latest visit yesterday.

You are offered a set of bands for each leg of a split stay.

All bands work interchangeably. As do the room keys. Room keys at VGF did work for FP- as of yesterday (pulled several myself).

Room keys themselves are being eliminated this month:

Nobody knows when all the FP- machines will be gone, but they are already deactivated at AK, and have been since a week before Christmas. My prediction is that when the last resort loses room keys, the FP- machines will go as well. That remains to be seen, of course.

Ah, and I forgot to add, my bands from both parts of a November split stay still worked fine for everything during my January stay. Including opening the door to our room. Brought one along just to confirm.

Our room keys had the RFID chip as well. We used them a few times to open the door to the room. However, they are all very capable of pulling a FP- as are the RFID AP and regular passes.

On our last day (January 2nd) I had pulled 20 FP- for TSM within 10 minutes of each other that were all for return times before 12PM using available media from only 5 people.
