Split Checks?

How do you split your restaurant checks?

  • Split evenly - $200 bill / 5 people = everyone chips in $40 plus tip

  • Pay your own way - Either ask for checks to be split or chip in enough to cover your meal

  • Other - because there is always an "other"

From the sounds of some of the folks here, I think that game is alive & well :rotfl2:

LOL, you have 36 posts on this thread and are now going to look down upon one-upmanship?

Now that's: :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Now I have a question for those with separate checks: If you order a bottle of wine, do you share it? Or does each person order a glass? Or are there multiple bottles on the table? That's one area that confuses me.

Honestly, I can't ever remember being at a restaurant & anyone ordering a bottle of wine regardless of how the bill was split. At the wineries whatever is in the cooler has always been "community property" though. And the best way to make sure your favorite variety is in there is to spring for a bottle :thumbsup2

Now, having said that, I've bought appetisers for the table or had it done by someone else, same for a round of drinks during dinner where one person had the round put on their bill. People usually offer to toss a few bucks toward whoever bought, but they almost always decline to accept any $.

ETA our waiter's here know that their job is to serve us and make it an enjoyable experience, they do this and are rewarded with a very good tip. Otherwise I would be finding another place to go for dinner..

I guess the waiters here don't know what their job is. ;) Making just over $2 an hour, you would think they'd be grateful just to have the honor of serving people food, and cleaning up after them!

Seriously, I don't know what a waiter here would do if he was handed a bunch of cards, and was told what to put on each one of them, or handed cash, and have to figure out who gets what change. Probably the same type of reaction if you asked him to cut your steak, or butter your bread.

It's really not complicated, since everyone here KNOWS to bring cash. I mean, if you were going to a poker party, would you show up with your debit card? Same thing - you bring cash.

You counted? Well am I at least in the lead???? :rotfl2: BTW, I have no problem with one-upmanship and in fact am all too happy to participate. It's when folks are busy with one-upmanship & try to pretend they're not that I get a chuckle ;)

My ATM doesn't dispense 1's, 5's, or 10's ;) So, I guess if everyone's cut is $23 they should all just toss in $40 and call it good, right?

Again, we (in the area where this, not separate checks, is the common way to handle this) use cash, so most of us have cash on us all the time.

When she said stop at the ATM, I guarantee you she meant in a 'so you make sure you have *enough* cash for a whole night out, not so you have any,' way. Like you'd grab an extra $100 or whatever, to supplement whatever is in your wallet from the day.

Hence, most people have fives, ones, etc., on them. You don't, you either take change from the pile because other people do, ask if someone else happens to have change, or you overpay the bill with a large bill on top and ask the waiter to break that for you.

Must every response be with this 'a-ha' tone, as if this just can't possibly work this way and you've found the comment that proves we don't really do this?

Actually if you are on the main page where all the threads are and you click on the number of replies to a thread it gives you a list of who posted and how many times. Neat little feature.

OMG, my only guess would be he would either quit on the spot or his head would explode.

Are you saying you honestly don't have any idea what would happen if my BIL and I each handed the waiter an AMEX and said, "Please put $250 on each of these?"

Their job is to do exactly that, and if they do it well, they'll make a whole lot more than that $2 an hour. ;)

BTW, I wonder how many folks who seem to be aghast at the notion of asking a server to run multiple tabs would feel the same about asking the server to do any of the other "extra" things we typically ask of them like say:

*Dressing on the side
*Ordering off menu
*Substituting sides

etc

In a world dominated by credit/debit cards, I just don't buy that he wouldn't know what to do.

Where is "here", that "EVERYONE" simply "KNOWS" to bring cash?

I have this image in my hand of someone fanning themselves with a wad of twenties.

Sounds a little Thurston Howell the Third/Lovey to me.

But doing that defeats the alleged convenience of the single check.

No, the response isn't meant to show you it can't work, it's to show you that it can occasionally be a PITA whereas the alternative never is. Believe it or not, I've survived my share of single checks over the course of my life.

YOu said what the waiters job was, I stated what the waiters job was, as it is done where I live. I am sorry that you seem to have a problem with that. My DH and I have both been waiters, we are well aware of how little they make. I have said on several occasions that I realize this is not how it is done in your area, what you cant or refuse to accept is, this is NOT the norm for our area. You refuse to listen. Playing poker is different that going out to dinner. Have a nice day.

Playing poker is different that going out to dinner.

I don't know about that. I tried a new place for lunch the other day and it was followed shortly by a royal flush.
