I read something on Facebook about lap bars now on Splash.

Is this true? If so how restrictive are they? Is better or worse for having them?:confused3

1- Yes, it is true.
2- Not too bad. Think: Big Thunder Mountain Lap Bars.
3- I'd prefer that they weren't there, but I don't think the ride is irreparably damaged.

I wish they weren't there either, but if it makes people stop attempting to get out of the ride midway through the ride than so be it :).

The lap bars are fine... They weren't restrictive. Another thing they did when they did the refurb was to redirect the cannons. I was chatting with a CM at Splash when I went for a fp fri, he said they redirected them so that they won't soak people anymore. He said the only ones who will get soaked now are heavier people who sit inthw front seat.

Yes it's true. We were there a few weeks ago, and they aren't bad. For me it was a nice add since we have a 4yo who is somewhat small.

Long discussion here http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2642962

Pic of them down.

I'm Ok with the lap bars (haven't tried them yet though). Once we were in a boat when a boisterous 30 (yes 30!) something year old (with 4 adults in all) were acting up. One of them reached out of the boat in a half standing position. Immediately a voice came over the loud speaker telling them to sit down. It is irresponsible, and I can understand why disney put the bars on.

I find it surprising that they redirected the water cannons. That was the best part of the ride!

Honestly, I am surprised that it has taken them this long to get the bars on there. People getting out of logs has been an issue since the attraction was launched.

That's real nice that he said heavier people who sit in the front. :sad2:

The splash you get that comes back on the log from the big splashdown *is* stronger the more people there are in the boat. If there isn't anyone in the front seats, the water will keep coming back and hit the people in the back.

It's not like if you're lighter and in the front you won't get wet at all. (When riding alone, I got just as wet in the front as I did riding in the back. When the boat was full of adults and I was in the back alone, I still got a bit wet, just not as much since there were so many people in front of me getting hit by the water.)

I liked not having to worry about getting splashed in the cooler weather, but I'll bet there will be lots of complaints once the weather is warmer.

However - we have not found the bars to be that restrictive. The foam handles are gone, so there is more knee room to a certain extent. And honestly, you could probably still get out from under the bars if you really wanted to, but its enough in the way that you can't easily do it and it would stop you from getting up instinctively.)

I find it odd they adjusted the canons. I mean whats the point? They can turn them on or off so why not have a temp guideline that dictates when it gets turned on or not. Adjusting the placement seems kind of extreme.

I am THRILLED if they redirected the water canons. I like to get a little bit wet. I do not want to be soaked. The appeal of the ride isn't water. That's just one aspect.

You have to admit though after coming around that corner... calculating the rate of speed and the average canon blast and trying to figure if you are going to get nailed with water was fun.

Or am I just weird...

No, not at all. I love doing that too. :goodvibes

Yes, I agree it was fun rooting your boat to "Go, Go, Go!" so that you wouldn't get soaked. But those times when you got soaked were not fun. I like to ride it 7-8 times per day when I go. When the temp is borderline, sometimes you really don't want to get wet, but you still really want to ride it.

I am kind of glad they redirected the cannons. As pp said, I don't mind getting a little wet, but I don't always want to get soaked. When we were in Disney World last October, I got nailed TWICE... Once was at night so I was cold and wet the rest of the EMH (is there anything worse than wet jean shorts and tennies with no sun to dry them off??) and the other was right before breakfast at CP, which was even colder than the night soaking. I had people stop and give me their sympathies because I was SOOOO wet. The last night my family was at MK, I opted out of the ride (which is my favorite) because I didn't want to be wet all evening again.

Actually, the times that we have gotten the wettest was not as a result of our splashdown, but when we were about to head up the mountain and a log came down next to us on the right. There's not much you can do about it, it's a matter of timing.
