Splash Mountain to become Princess and the Frog ride

I'll admit I've never seen Song of the South, I first heard about that movie on here. I only ever knew the Brer stories as just that, old folklore.

BTMRR hanging out there all by itself seems lonely.

No no no.

Naked BTMRR is fine. It’s great. Don’t give anyone any ideas lol.

Think it might be time to move this thread to the community boards lol. I have a bad feeling this is going to get ugly in here

Popular and good are two completely different categories. You could have stuck an anna and elsa attraction in stichs great escape and lines would be out the door. Disney showed they cant properly update a classic attraction here. Splash Mountain will now have a longer line bc its a princess attached. Does that make it a better ride?
All I know is that Malestrom gave myself and everyone i know nightmares as kids. The trolls were so creepy. I was more terrified of it then the Haunted Mansion or Tower of Terror. I remember always sprinting off the boat so i would not get stuck in the film(that grinding noise 🤮), cause my dad enjoyed the ride and the film.

As i got older i enjoyed it for what it was, but Frozen is so much more fun.

What did Brer Rabbit & company have to do with Frontierland? They’re from Song of the South. That didn’t make sense in Frontierland either ... interesting that people don’t think Princess & the Frog fits when the Splash story isn’t cohesive with Frontierland either.

I have addressed this many times - they made it fit with music and trappings - the folktales don't take place anywhere in particular. The ride is not based on the characters telling the stories in the film, but rather the stories themselves. Really Splash Mountain is its own thing in many ways.

That said, I have more of an issue with time period for PatF not so much location. There was a time when Louisiana was considered the frontier - but it wasn't in 1912 and the story theme doesn't really match. They can make it work, but they will need to retheme surrounding areas and carve out a sub-land. I have already made my suggestions - my fear is that they won't do that.

There’s a reason why the movie has been buried by Disney. It’s because the movie is racist. I understand that a lot of people love this ride. I’m one of them, it’s my favorite ride in Magic Kingdom. I also understand that there are a lot of people who are uncomfortable with having the ride in the park because of the movie’s racist roots. No one should be made to feel uncomfortable in the Magic Kingdom because of this ride. It’s time for it to change.

There was a poster earlier who said he was uncomfortable by the theme of Main Street USA because it harkens back to a time when his rights were lesser.

You are right....no one should be made to feel uncomfortable in the Magic Kingdom....but here we are. Why is it okay to accommodate some and not others?

FEA was a quick re-theme of a ride that was consistently a walk-on. Maelstrom was a cult classic, but not a mainstream hit.

Tony Baxter, who came up with the actual idea for Splash Mountain, is involved in the Princess & the Frog re-theme. This will be incredibly well thought out.

Also, exploration of the Frontier started with the Louisiana Purchase. I know the film is in 1912, but still, if you keep the ride theme entirely based on the swamp parts of the film, i dont think you really get a sense of the time period.

Tom Sawyer Island and the Riverboat is also mostly based on Missouri. Im not sure how a swampy bayou Louisiana theme is so much of a stretch to fit in there.

Adventureland includes Jungle, Middle Eastern Bazar, and then Caribbean theming. They all blend well

I love Splash Mountain, but ppl seem to be saying that the new theme is a WILDLY different aesthetic than what is there now. Which just isnt the case.

Only problem is, budgets change for Disney projects all the time. If we’re looking at 2-3 years before construction starts on the ride, what we saw, and what they had planned today will very likely change within now to and when they start. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if it winds up being DLR only. And either WDW’s version stays the same, or they come up with another IP or original (lol) idea for the re-theme.

I’m not saying thats what will happen, or thats what I think will happen, just saying I wouldn’t be surprised.

I know this may be silly but....can't they keep it Splash Mountain? The name I mean.

Why would they, though? Legitimately asking. I’ve seen this suggested in a few places. If they feel there’s a need to overhaul the attraction, though, keeping the name of the old ride doesn’t make sense.

No. They will want this ride to have a completely different identity. With Splash Mountain, people would just think of the old theming. They will want the name to be on brand with the new theme and not remind people of the previous version. Disney prides themselves on theming and immersion - they would definitely need to change the name as the ride will have a whole new identity.
