The DIS is reporting that Splash Mountain will be closed from1/18 to 05/26

This seems pretty long for a normal maintenance closure, but I could be wrong...anyone know why it's closed for so long? :confused3

There are short term projects and long term projects. The maintenance cycle appears to be call for long term work.

The only time I've ever known it to be closed for several months was back around 2001 or 2002 - it seemed like it was closed our entire first Winter of having AP's. When it reopened, they had the new logs (and new height requirements to go with them ).

I'm curious to see if major changes will be made during this extended closure - heard a rumor that they were putting some type of lap restraint bar in the logs, but that doesn't seem very likely. (I definitely wouldn't feel terrific about being locked into a water ride with a lap restraint bar).

Maybe somebody else around the boards has heard what the closure is for...if so, I hope they post and spill the beans, LOL! :goodvibes

well it's a big ride, lots of water to be pumped out and that takes alot of time.. and they may need to update the paint and what not on the whole ride itself...

In 2007 they had Splash Mtrn down for 4+ months for a major refurb. :teacher: It happens every few years because they need to replace things that wear out.

It is a bummer of you miss a ride under refurb but it would be an even bigger bummer if there was an accident due to insufficient maintenance. :goodvibes

This happens every three to four years with Splash Mountain, chances are there will be some changes to the ride vehicles....maybe they will finally add a transfer log, we have the technology to accomplish it now.

I was unaware of the '07 closure, as I only visited in August that year, and it was open at that time.

If I gave the impression that I somehow disagree that maintenance is necessary to avoid accidents (:confused3), I certainly didn't intend to.

I don't keep up on it enough to "know" that SM is down every few years for an extended period of time - was just trying to offer an answer to OP.

Sorry if I came across as putting down your question. That was unintentional. :) I was more replying to the general topic of the thread than your specific post. :flower3:

No worries, HG. :goodvibes

I am curious to find out if any (noticeable) changes are made to SM. We go back in September, so unless something unforeseen occurs, it should be open when we go. :yay:

I really didn't know that they close it down for several months every few years. Obviously it can be too cold to go on it in Jan. and Feb., but those people who are going to miss it in Mar., Apr., and May sure are going to be bummed!

A CM at Disneyworld last week indicated that DW Splash was getting lap bars during its next refurb so it is possible that DL will get them too (not sure how that will work with the different logs). We are sad that it will be down during our trip 5/3-5/10 but are hopefully it will be back up early or we'll just ride in when we go back to DL in another few years.
