IMO the boats are NOT as comfortable as WDW. However, they would have to basically rebuild the entire ride to allow for 2 across seating. The flumes are just too small.
Lots of people still love the ride, despite the seating.

I haven't seen a measurement of the flume but that would be my guess. Since DL got their SM first, the side by side seating WDW got may be an afterthought that it was designed to accomodate.
I find two things about the seating. WDW makes for better onride photos, since you aren't sitting right behind the person in front of you. DL gives a more thrilling, wild ride since you are less restrained.
This is one of those situations where WDW got a bonus by getting DLR's experience... Splash Mountain at DL turned out to be so popular there was (and is) a capacity issue. So when they decided to add the ride to the WDW, they increased capacity and redesigned the flume to accommodate.
There's no way to increase the capacity at DL's Splash Mountain... the entire ride and flume would have to be demolished and rebuilt.
I agree, I like the seating much better at WDW. Actually I like Splash Mountain much better at WDW in general. Just seems more brighter. I rode it for the first time at WDW, and was disappointed in the DLR version. Still enjoy though.
I have to say, I enjoy the theming of Splash at DL, except you don't get splashed, you get sloshed. I hate getting soaked. I rode WDW's version and loved not getting sloshed. We did get nailed by the water canons as a log came down the plume, but that is the most wet we got on the ride. I like the roominess of the WDW logs as well.

My understanding is that the side-by-side seating was driven by Tokyo Disney where single file seating is not culturally accepted. So they invented the side-by-side for Japan and WDW adopted that.
I am a larger person and found it just plain uncomfortable - and agree with the slosh - we were soaked and actually went to change because it was so cold that day. People are much more wet after Splash in DL than even most people coming off grizzly in DCA! I skip it now - don't like the seating and the soaking, and find the ride not nearly as good as WDW.
Just got back about a month ago from my first trip to DL after several trips to WDW. I'm a larger guy, although not as large as I used to be, and I didn't have in trouble with DL's seats. Depending on how you're big, the back seat of the DL boats may be more comfortable.
The ride feels rushed at DL as well. When you go into the animatronic areas you are flying by them. I get the exact opposite feel at WDW. I like WDW version much better as well. The side by side seating at WDW just makes for a better experience. One of the few rides where I like the WDW version better by the way.
The last seat is roomy and comfortable with lots of space to rest your back against. We put DH back there and he liked that seat even better than the WDW logs.
