I am looking at the news coming out of the Magic Kingdom the past 2 days with lines of 240 minutes for Splash Mountain Merch and people carrying away bags of merch.
I know Splash Mountain is controversial. Controversial enough not to release Song of the South and to re-theme Splash Mountain.
And Robert Iger even coming out and saying the film is “not appropriate in today’s world,”

1. Why is the ride still open?
2. Why is Disney selling merch?

It seems awfully hypocritical of them to say one thing is bad but not if we can make money.
Sorry if this is a lightning rod, but how can one be wrong and one be right?

Nothing about this is complicated.

Everything is either politically or financially motivated. Disney has zero morals, like most any other huge company. They care about 2 things: Looking politically correct (hence the change) and making as much money as possible (hence selling merchandise until the change).

If you think any move is made by companies for any other reason you're living in a bag of delusion. That or maybe you actually believe things are made by Disney magic.

Their post about retheming Splash Mountain made no mention of the currently existing theme.
The film may be "not appropriate in today's world", but the ride is largely divorced from the film, and thus operating the ride and selling Splash Mountain merch has not been an issue.

Disney has decided to retheme the ride anyway, as they are wont to do. They've rethemed attractions before and will do so again. They did not blame this decision on the current theme, so what reason is there to not operate the ride and sell merch in the meantime?

Where I have the problem is that WDW isn't putting a cap on what visitors can purchase. I happen to know someone who was going to make a purchase for me, but apparently EVERYTHING WAS SOLD OUT - however, lots of it can be found on EBay, Amazon, etc. at 3 to 10 times the original amount. All I wanted was one each of the 3 Brers to gift to my future [first] grandchild.

....sorry if I'm ruffling anyone's feathers, but price-gouging is a NO-NO. Original prices ran around $20-$25 each and you can now find them for around $200 upwards of $550. THAT IS SO WRONG.

It is really too bad that they are rethemeing splash mountain- I love the ride as is with Brer Rabbit. Such a classic. And I also wish they still had merch left- was sad to see they were sold out when I went on Aug 2

...here's some of that merch:
