Grandaughter has been diagnosed with Mono a couple of weeks ago and our trip is this coming weekend!! Dr says she can still go ( she's 5 )but no roller coasters and no speedway cars (because she could be bumped from behind) but pretty much everything else she can do - we'll just have to stop and rest as she needs it. So - was wondering about Splash Mtn - she's been so excited about riding it, but I've never ridden it - Is it smooth ( I know it's got the big drop at the end, but that should be ok - if it's not jerky where it's gonna throw her against the side like roller coasters do? )
Just need to know how smooth or rough it gets?
thanks!!

Most of the trip is a slow, smooth ride however, if it's busy... at the end, you could bump the boat ahead of you or be bumped by the car behind you. That's really the only part that I can remember that jerked me around, but that can happen on POTC also.

I would probably not chance it if I were you. Mono causes the spleen to enlarge giving it a greater chance for ruputre. Even though the ride isn't what one would consider rough or jerky, there would still be a chance that she could bump herself if not in the drop, at the end if another boat bumps you. A ruptured spleen can be a nasty thing and a trip on SM isnt worth it. IMO

Also, like you said, you need to have her rest when she needs, and even when she doesn't. After mono, even the little things can seem to tire one out. Make sure she rests often, (even if she says shes not tired) because you dont want her to hit a wall later and not be able to enjoy the rest. Trust me.

The bumping of logs after the big drop, near the waterfall & again at the end are the only bumps/jerks I can think of.....

Has the doctor checked her spleen? Is it enlarged? My son had an enlarged spleen due to his health condition when we took him to WDW his first time & his doctor didn't limit his riding at all.

Have you ever been on a log flume?

It's pretty much the same (the ride mechanism, anyway) as any Six Flags, or local amusement park log flume.

If you haven't been on one, the descriptions above are about on target as I can think of.

Actually I find Splash Mountain to be rather soothing, with the log bobbing slowly in the water. Last trip I had a bad neck, skipped BTMRR, and I found Splash actually made me feel a little better (doesn't hurt that I love that ride).

thanks for the replies ... that helps me to think it through better. When the dr checked her last they said her spleen wasn't really noticably enlarged and she's gotten some better since then - still, we'll be careful, of course.
I think I'll gage it on how she feels as well as how crowded the parks are that day. We ride the log flume all the time at 6 flags and the bumping there at the end is really nothing much even on really crowded days when they are running them through fast. I agree, it is probably soothing.

:sunny: My DD 16 had Mono last year. If we went to WDW then I would have let her ride Splash Mtn. Good luck and have fun, go with your gut feeling.
