Can anyone tell me about how Spirit assigns seats? We have less than a 2 hour flight so I don't want to spend an extra $60 each way for the 3 of us to sit together if I don't have to, but I don't want DD14 at the other end of the plane either. I've read that families are normally kept together but was hoping someone here could share their experiences.

Just remember.. Spirit employees are not really "encouraged" to provide good service. If your kids sitting apart from you expect little to no help. But honestly 14 is old enough to sit alone so I would risk it (Well... actually I would not risk my vacation to Spirit, but if I did I would risk the seating fee LOL!)

From Spirit's website:
Yes, there is a nominal fee to pre-reserve your seat assignments. We recommend it if you would like to guarantee a preferred location onboard the aircraft, and to ensure that traveling companions are seated together. Prices differ based on location in the aircraft.

There isn't any reason your daughter can't sit on the other end of the plane. There isn't any reason to think passengers will be willing to give up a seat they paid for in order for you to sit near your 14 year old daughter. You have a choice. Pay the money or indicate to Spirit you don't care if you sit near your daughter. Spirit makes it easy. Passengers who don't pay are telling Spirit exactly that.

Many Spirit passengers don't want to pay for an assigned seat yet many (most?) passengers want to sit next to their traveling companions. You can do a search. There are numerous posts indicating they were split up, with kids a lot younger then you DD.

Your example is easy. Absolutely no shot of Spirit, or other passengers, doing anything to move your family together. Maybe if your daughter was 4 instead of 14.

Agree with all of the above about Spirit - in addition FYI Spirit assigns all seats at about 24 hours out - DH and I have been separated when booked together but didn't pay for assigned seats - and there is no way they will even attempt to reassign your seats once you get to the airport. At least that is our experience and what we have been told. When I travel Spirit with anyone I want/need to sit with I pay for assigned seats before the 24 hours when Spirit randomly assigns the left-over seats. Customer service is not something Spirit is known for;).

Perhaps log into your Spirit flight like you are thinking of purchasing seats. Notice how many seats are already purchased. It seems to me like many people who fly Spirit choose to purchase seats ahead of time. If the seating is looking very limited you might want to pre-purchase seats to avoid the hassle. Spirit fares are "cheap" because the airline counts on $ from seat assignments and baggage fees.

To answer your question, on one flight, I purchased seats for my husband and two kids, as I did not want the kids to sit alone. I left my seat open to chance and logged into our flight right at the 24 hour mark and luckily, I was assigned near my family. I was ok sitting wherever, though (alone time watching a movie on my iPad). If you want to take a chance, try checking in at exactly the 24 hour mark. Your two seats may (or may not) get assigned near each other. A larger group, probably not. Spirit employees are not known for their customer service, so be prepared if you do get split up. If the computer really splits you up badly, you could try doing curbside check-in (assuming the airport has it - MCO does) as a LAST ditch effort. Kindly ask the agent to look for seats closer together and be prepared to tip generously if you score a seat reassignment. This assumes there are unassigned seats still left on the plane. Worst case is you and your daughter get split up for a short period of time during the flight.

GOOD LUCK!! Enjoy you trip!

BTW - make sure you prepay for your bags BEFORE the 24 hour checkin period. Price per bag increases.

We just flew Spirit (to and from Florida but not WDW) and did not pay to choose seats. On the way down, we were all together in row 37 and on the way home, all together, in row 14. The flights were not totally full, and I did notice people asked if they could move and were allowed to do so. We had excellent service from all Spirit employees we encountered.
