We have done HDDR 3 times and love it. Did Backyard BBQ once and found it not really for us. Have seen mixed reviews on SOA. Can anyone give us specifics? Have DS(16), DS(13) and DD(9). Only luau we have ever seen was in Universal.

Thanks for your help.

We were certain we were going to love it, despite the poor reviews. Unfortunately we did not. The Food was poor, the show was too long and drawn out (actually got bored other than the fire dancer), and the DDP seating had us in the far back behind a pole.

However, i'm of the belief that only you can judge whether you like something or not. Many people don't like Tony's or WCC and we do! I say if your up for a change, try it out and see if you like it.

Best pic we could get with my camera of the fire dancer!

I agree with the PP comments. That being said I'm still glad we gave it a try. Only you will know if you really like it and the only way you'll find that out is to try it.

My family really enjoys the Luau. We vacation for 2 weeks every year and do both Hoopdedu and Luau everyyear. The show is hokie, but so it the Hoopde du, the firedude is worth the show alone. The food is good, not divine, but good. I do enjoy the ribs better at the luau.Chicken is very flavorful. Pineappple is yummy and so is the bread. Rice is a little dry for me. Love the veggies. My kids love the chocolate volcano dessert. My DH loves the salad dressing they use. Doing it again this Nov. but giving up the Hoopdedu this year.
I would give it a try!

Absolutely correct.

I have done both HDDR and SoA and while I enjoy the food and show more at the HDDR, the luau is really excellent, too. I will do it again one day for sure.

But thing is, if you ask 100 people which they like, you are going to get every possible answer so the only way to know for sure is to go for it! At least then you won't wonder any more. And who knows, you might love it and it becomes a staple for you.

I would not do the SoA again. DW and i thought the shows boring and drawn out. the food was good but not worth it if we have to sit through the show again. that being said the only way to know if it is for you is to try it out. if you have done the other shows and have not tried this one as of yet you might want to do so. just because we did not enjoy the show does not mean that you would not.

Our Ratings of Luau:
. . . food price value: C
. . . food quality: C
. . . food quantity per serving: A
. . . food prep speed: B
. . . food selection: C
. . . seating quantity: B
. . . seating comfort: C-
. . . eatery atmosphere: B
. . . eatery convenience: C
. . . staff friendliness: B
. . . staff helpfulness: A
. . . character interaction: D (performers, not cartoon character)

NOTE: The Luau is a play upon the traditional Hawaiian or
Pacific luau. However, the "play" is silly at best and sub-par
when compared to any authentic luau. If you never plan upon
attending a true luau, then this would suffice. If you have done
a real luau, or will in the future, leave this unattended.

We enjoyed it. We've also done several luaus in Hawaii, including the one on Maui (don't recall the name) that everyone raves about as being very "authentic", and, most recently, the Smith Family Luau on Kauai.

Frankly, we think they are all hokey.

As for SOA, we thought the food was pretty good and the show was okay, too. However, we had a front row table and had a party of 10, so we were not sharing our table with others. I would not want to do the show without a front row table and a group.

We have also done the Universal Orlando luau. I thought the Universal luau had better food overall. However, I thought the Universal show dragged somewhat and didn't really feel that way about SOA.

Also, show for show, I guess we enjoy HDDR more than SOA (although the ribs at HDDR are totally inedible).

Thanks everyone for the input. I think we are going to give it a shot.
