Spirit airlines refused to give us a cup of water at first

Everyone is assuming the OP and the brother are adults. Perhaps they are minors? My kids used to fly alone all the time and didn't have credit cards.

Could also explain why they didn't think to buy water and the willingness to drink from a sink.

You're right, I did assume that. Her user name appears to have the name of children and the word mommy in it so it is my assumption that she is an adult.

I honestly paid no attention to that!

It sounds as if your brother was very thirsty not dehydrated. If he was dehydrated, that 6 oz cup of water they provided would not be enough to re-hydrate him.

I'm also in the camp of not understanding how you can travel as an adult without a credit card? I try and avoid using my credit card as much as possible, but I would never think to travel without one.

I had a kid sitting next to me on a flight who was traveling alone. He wanted to buy a Coke but his mom only sent him with cash. I paid for his drink. If I wanted, I could have paid for it and just taken the cash from him. I'm guessing someone around you would have been willing to pay for a bottle of water if you gave them the cash.

If my kid ever travelled alone, I probably wouldn't think of sending along a CC either...would have just done cash. Note to self - send kids with a prepaid CC...even for long field trips. Just in case :)

When my oldest traveled alone, they still accepted cash. I wonder if they allow parents to prepay for some in-flight things for their kids if they are unaccompanied minors now? That could definitely be a pain since a child wouldn't have a credit card. That flight where I paid for the drink was the first time I had encountered the no cash rule so I am sure his parents didn't know about it either.

water from the bathroom sinks in airplanes are not meant for drinking.
thats nothing new which is probably why you got an odd look when you requested it.

most airlines no longer accept cash.
its been the case for several years at least on the airlines i travel.

spirit is a very low budget airline.
their policy is that your butt in a seat plus a personal item is all thats included in their fares.
if you're looking for a drink and snack to be included then go with a different airline.
personally i'd never fly spirit as by the time i'm done paying for a carry on and luggage its costing me more than other airlines.

your bro should have bought a bottle of water with cash in the airport.
now he knows for next time epseically if he's flying on spirit.

Interesting. Until you pointed out about her user name, I also thought maybe the OP & her brother were very young adults, in their early 20's, in college or something, with no credit cards. But in the OP's signature, it actually lists her blog URL as a Canadian Disney Mommy. Get this, the blog is FOR traveling with young kids, especially to WDW. In her own words she says she has traveled extensively, even as a kid herself with her family. So, I find it odd that she travels so much and has no credit card. :confused3 Maybe her next blog post should be about the need for credit cards while traveling.

In the OP's defense though, I have never traveled with Spirit Airlines. I usually fly with American or United and when absolutely forced to, with Delta. The first two have always given me free water. (I don't remember about Delta.) I usually have to ask for no ice, as they pour it from pitchers or a bottle and add ice to the cup. It would never occur to me that I'd have to pay for WATER. Food, yes. Snacks, nowadays yes. Other beverages, yes. Water? No, never would have occurred to me. And I wouldn't have known to read up on it. (I DO carry my own empty water bottle with me past the TSA, while traveling, and fill up before getting on the plane. As a PP said, sometimes, due to turbulence, the flight attendants cannot take out the beverage cart or even walk up the aisle to give a single person service.)

However, I carry a credit card for traveling, as in this case, there are times when traveling where they only take credit cards, i.e. car rental deposits or advance hotel reservations. I still can't fathom traveling so much and NOT having a credit card for such emergencies. Anyone who's had their plane delayed or diverted knows there are a myriad of unforeseen occurrences that could happen where you just need that extra money which either would be unsafe to carry or unexpectedly needed.

That is very odd.

Whenever we fly we make sure to have meds, food, and water/drinks with us and while I am not a newb to flying, I have not traveled extensively either.

how could you have booked the flights without a credit card? really?

Someone else could have booked the flights with a credit card. And I think Spirit accepts cash for bookings done at an airport counter location. (They waive the "passenger usage fee" if booked in person too.) Still, it's unwise to travel, especially long distances and internationally yet without at least a pre-paid credit card.

It is possible to be an adult and not have credit cards. It is possible that the OP and her brother have bad credit and can't get one, or they didn't use them wisely in the past and don't have one now. Hopefully, they learned from this experience, and when they travel in the future, they'll get some prepaid cards so they can use something in an emergency.

She already wrote a blog post about the 2-3 credit cards she owns.

The OP does not say she didn't have a credit card, she only had cash on her. Her brother did not have a credit card.

My brother is young and does not own a credit card. I had one but had accidentally left it in my checked in luggage so I only had cash with me. Will try not to do that again! Sure it was my fault that I misplaced my credit card but my little brother was so thirsty and I felt helpless. I told him not to drink the water they gave him as we didn't know where it came from but I guess he was pretty desperate and like some said he is young and doesn't care. I am a frequent traveller and made one mistake with leaving my credit in my checked luggage and was just a little disappointed thAt the airline made it such a big to get a cup of water. Well lesson learned. But I'm glad that after I asked the second attendant nicely she seemed to understand and got him his cup of water so all is well in the world.

Orlando to Detroit would be about a 2-3 hour flight. Unless your brother was already feeling the ill effects of dehydration, he did not become dangerously dehydrated on the flight. He was thirsty, and you should have been prepared for that too. As others have mentioned, you should have known their policy before boarding.

You can plan and prepare up the ying yang and human mistakes still happen. I thought I had my credit card on board but later found out it was in my checked in bag. Brother had water from airport fountain before boarding flight and became thirsty on the flight suddenly. Maybe from dry cabin? Who knows. I only had cash. Airline was reluctant but was eventually accommodating in his situation. Will make sure to buy water before boarding plan from now on.

Sorry this happened to you. But, Spirit is NOTORIOUSLY a low cost carrier. I'll bet anything the reason you flew on Spirit (rather than another airline) is that they were the cheapest option for you. I don't know how anyone could get on a Spirit flight and be unaware of their policies. And, I've not been on any airline in YEARS that accepts cash. If you travel, you need a credit or debit card, period. I'd be very reluctant to travel without one regardless of any airline's policy on accepting cash. Unexpected things can happen when you travel, and you need a credit/debit card to cover the everyday things that can crop up.

Yes agreed carry credit cards with me everywhere. Just happened that I had misplaced it in my carry on.

They are not obligated nor should they be. Spirit is a mega budget airline, and I assume you were aware of this when you bought your tickets. I don't believe water from the bathroom sink is potable on airplanes so they likely couldn't give you a cup.

Had I been sitting next to/near you, I likely would have offered to buy him the water and let you give me cash.

Thanks. That would have been very kind of you.

Just so you know, the water from the sink in the lavatory really is not intended for drinking and it could make you sick (there is always a little sign on planes I've been on), however there is should be water available in the galley, which they use to make coffee and tea. Then again, on Spirit airlines, I dunno if they even have coffee and tea.

As the person who used to fill the potable tanks on aircraft... I promise, you should NEVER drink that stuff.

Even on the major carriers... almost EVERYTHING is extra.

On our last, 8 hour flight, they didn't have anything left to eat... NOTHING... not even to purchase.

8 hours, and I swear, I was beginning to think the drink cart was only going to come by once.

Do not even begin to get me started on airlines.
ANY of them.
Just plain in-humane and evil.
