Did you ever ride your bike to school...and then walk home...and then went to get your bike so you could go over a friends house and you got all bajiggidy that someone stole your bike?
then you realize it's the ONLY ONE sitting at the school locked up?
My parents drove me. I went to private school through 8th grade, and even after I transferred to the public school they wouldn't let me ride the bus. I didn't have my own car until senior year.
I lived around the corner from my school, and I started walking alone when I was in the first grade. When we moved to another town, around the fourth grade I walked about 3 blocks to a bus stop.
My dd is in the fourth grade, and she's allowed to ride her bike to school - about a 10 minute ride, including the crosswalk. It amazes me how many parents won't even let their kids walk down the street to get to school - and I'm talking about those ages 8 and up. We live in a pretty safe neighborhood, with dozens of kids walking and riding bikes in the neighborhood, so I feel comfortable with my dd doing it on her own.
K-9 walked
10-12 bus or got ride with friends I had an afterschool job downtown from 10th grade on, so rode the bus downtown. Then my mother picked me up afterwork. I didn't have a car or drive until I was 23.
I went to 13 schools, so it is a grab bag--
mostly k-6 walking--except 4th grade in Kingsville TX, the Moms had a car pool.
Last half of 6th thru 12th bus, the schools were 10/14 miles distant.
Oh, unless the winter weather was atrocious there was a max walk of 2 miles to the bus stop--no dropping off every 50 yds or so!
K-5 walked the 5 blocks to school, we only had one car and my dad drove it to work.
6-9 walked the 12 blocks to the Middle School/High School
10-12 I drove
