Spin-off: American and British/Irish culture Q&A thread.

A score of 4+ on at least 3 AP exams? Holy cow (as we say here in Chicagoland). Sounds like your "premier schools" are similar to our "Ivy League"
Interesting. That was pretty typical at my high school. I got 4-5s on 6 AP exams (and one measly 3). And I was like 150th in my class. Most of my peer group would have easily met that (at least that portion of the requirements).

The family travelling to Balmoral seems like a bad sign. I know that not everyone agrees with even having a Royal family, but I think the Queen’s death (when it happens - not saying it is imminent) will leave a huge whole for the family and, in a different sense, for the nation (I don’t know the percentages, but for a large percentage, she’s been the only reigning Queen in their life time).

We are grateful that she has served us so well for so long.

British and Irish Disboarders, while in school did you ever learn about any American authors like Mark Twain, Emily Dickinson, or Herman Melville? In most schools in America, we read several books written from your side of the pond and wonder if it’s reciprocal.

British Disboarders, are you making any special dishes for the World Cup matches? I was thinking of having hot dogs for lunch during our (USA) match against Wales with this Welsh dessert that I just discovered on YouTube:

Any questions for today? I have one for Wales. Has there been any DNA differences found between the Welsh and English? I ask because Ancestry seems to indicate that they are the same. Scotland and Ireland seem to get their own DNA sections. I’m just curious if it is true that ethnically English DNA is exactly the same as Welsh DNA? I always assumed if someone has English ancestry then they probably have some Welsh in them too. As a side note @Jangles , I’ll get a Welsh kit if you beat us on Monday to go along with my England kit. I can’t stand the USA kit this year.

British Disboarders, does each country in the UK have separate passports or do Wales, England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland all have the same one?

The passports look the same, but mine has a trilingual page. I don’t know whether they all have that, or just non English ones.

British people, how common is it to have an ancestor that was a redcoat? I feel sometimes here in America we think that all British people must be related to one at some point in history. My own theory is that the feeling derives from British folk constantly insisting on calling us Yanks.
