Every spring/summer at my office we get SPIDERS. I use capitals because these are large spiders! I have a spider/insect/moving thing phobia. I know it's ridiculous and I wish I wasn't such a scardy cat, but I am!

I've been in this office for 5 years. We occupy the top floor so they come from the roof and in the vents.

Every year after someone first spots them we get the owners of the building to spray. Usually they have to spray multiple times throughout the summer.

My question is: Is it unreasonable that I may 'scream' (really a large gasp) and leave my desk if I see a spider coming down at me? I unfortunatly sit right under a vent now and just today a spider was crawling out from my overhead bin.

2 co-workers came to my aid (even they were shocked with how big it was) and got rid of it but everyone seemed like I was nuts because I was so upset by this.
And I just know now that they'll be more of them. There's never just one.

Well I am the wrong person to ask because I have a severe spider phobia. I mean like I am terrified. The other day I opened my mailbox and took out my mail there was a HUGE spider in the mailbox. It seriously looked like a mini tarantula. I screamed and shoved the mail back inside and practically ran to the house. I made DH get the mail later and of course there was no spider to be found.

Find a good spider killer in the office and be ver nice to him or her!

Omg. That is terrifying. I am with you - I know it's irrational and that logically most spiders aren't going to hurt you but I also have a phobia. I think it's the fact that they always seem to drop or come crawling out of nowhere when you least expect it. I honestly don't know that I could work at your office - I would be looking up, down and around for any movement so often I wouldn't be able to get any work done! I found a huge wolf spider in my basement last year (don't google, I warn you) and thankfully I had a can of the long-range Raid so I could stand across the room and nuke it, since there was no way I was getting close enough to squish it. Even so, I almost couldn't sleep in the house that night!

Arachnophobia - The fear of spiders

I am constantly rescuing my wife from them.

I would have no problem with you getting up out of your chair and stepping away, However I would not like it if you screamed or let out a very loud gasping noise or whatever you called it , if I was on the phone with a customer or doing business, or if I was in a cubicle and couldn't see you just be surprised with your scream. That would be very startling.

I think I would be proactive and if I knew they came in the vent over my desk I would spray it with my own insect spray when I left at night so they would be dissuaded from coming in there, but the "mist" would be gone by the time I got back the next day.

I'm with you, I don't think I could work there. So screaming is probably more rational that not being able to work there at all ;)
I have 2 cans of raid in our downstairs so there's always one within reach.

Does your employer permit you to bring flame throwers to work?

I'll have to re-read our handbook!

I felt better by the fact that someone asked "Did she scream?" and the people around me all said no. I must be getting better with my tolerance. ;)

Funny thing is we just had to take our annual Compliance Training and we learned about Hostile Work Environments. To me, spiders=a hostile work environment!

I don't do spiders. I don't care how small. I would have to work from home until the invasion was under control. I see a spider descending on my head from above, you can bet I'm going to run away screaming. I think that's a pretty normal response to a spider coming at you. I'd keep a can of Raid on my desk. The only good spider is a dead spider.

Luckily, we don't have spider issues because we have giant spider eating geckos, salamanders, and lizards. Those don't bother me, though, unless they sneak up on me.

One time I had to crawl under a desk to get something out of a box. I had just tilted the box over and reached my hand inside when I saw it about 3 inches from my nose. It was some kind of reptile, about 3.5" wide across the middle and about 8" long from head to where the tail started. It scared the crap out of me because I wasn't expecting it to be there. At first, all my co-workers were making fun of me because I was scared of a little lizard, but after I took the box over to them and showed them my "little" lizard, they stopped laughing. We then put the creature, whatever it was, in our bosses desk. We had been complaining that something was scurrying around for weeks, but he wouldn't listen. Scared him to death, so much so that he called the exterminator. So in the end, it all worked out rather well.

I also encountered a red fox at work one time that about gave me a heart attack when it jumped out from where it was hiding. No idea how it got in the building, and no idea where it went when it ran off. I didn't stick around to find out.
