OK, I had my first horrible spider encounter of the season today, and I need support from all the MANY spider haters on the DIS.;)

I was picking up an empty concrete bag in our yard and  EEK! a BIG, UGLY, Halloween-like brown and black spider was on the bag!

I didn't want to step on it, because it was too big and would have left lots of body parts on my shoe. And I didn't want to pick up the bag to throw it in the trash bag, because then it might have jumped onto ME! So I attempted to squish it with a piece of wood, but it escaped!

Now it is crawling free in my backyard, probably trying to gain entry into my house where it can terrify me some more.

And this is just the beginning of the warm weather...

I had an expierence like that but I had five of those nasty, hairy, ugly, things on the door from my garage to the house :scared1:. After picking myself up off the floor :faint: I proceeded to get a can of bee and wasp spray (you know the kind you can spray from 30ft away) and opened up on those disgusting creatures :crazy2:. So then my problem was trying to get up enough courage to walk over their dying, on their back with legs twitching, bodies :scared:. Well needles to say I called the ORKIN man the next day. I have not had a problem since. :happy2:

EEEKKK!!! Hate those nasty things!!

We had one a few years ago that was UGLY! It was an orange color and made its home on my kids swingset. Needless to say my kids were screaming, "Spider!" I said.."OK, I'll take care of it."
Wrong!!!
It was huge and had babies waiting to attack us!!!

Finally killed her and the babies...have been traumatized ever since. Whew! I hate spiders!!!

What book did my 6 year old son bring home from the school library Wed? SPIDERS!!

HELP!

yesterday I was cleaning the tub..went to take the stopper out..and this HUGE spider came out of the drain..I screamed..then remembered noone else was home..and I drowned the little sucker..there seem to be more of them around this year than ever!..YUCKO!

I really HATE spiders--this thread is giving me the creeps--it brought back one of my awful high school memories: I lived in the Mojave Desert as a teenager and remember playing soccer outside in gym class and looked down and there, by my shoe was a HUGE tarantula. They are so awful--and they JUMP!!!! It started jumping when the teacher tried to pick it up (with a cone--not her hands--I would have fainted). YUCK YUCK YUCK

I totally agree, hate spiders but the odd thing is that I love the Spiderman movies

You have my sympathy. We get a lot of cennipeds (sp?) here and all those legs nearly make we  :crazy2: :faint:. The other day one came out from under one of the kitchen cabinets and I couldn't get it before it ran under the stove.

You do know that spiders can hold their breath for a VERY LONG time and have a very keen sense of direction.

I would be careful of using the toilet for a while.

:teeth:

I once was out in the garage (many moons and houses ago) and doing the laundry when my ex came out and said Hold Still... he scooped a yucky giant ugly spider off of my back.....:earseek:

I just about died.... fortunately he got to it before I saw it or else I might have :faint:

and yesterday as I was cleaning out some old toy boxes a huge "sticky" realistic looking spider fell out and I just about died... I knew it wasnt real right off but I coudlnt help but throw it across the room...

OK-so- am I going to be the only person who speaks kindly of spiders? Spiders do an excellent job of controlling the populations of other pests that you may prefer to avoid. Funny you should start this thread.....I might use it as a plug to invite anyone who is interested out to Oklahoma University this summer for the annual American Arachnological Society meeting. We (those of us actually hosting the meeting this year) study scorpions but there will be plenty of exciting new spider research to learn about at this meeting (and the research is NOT about killing them). Do you think I'm joking? No really....follow the link www.americanarachnology.org/AAS_Meetings/AAS_2004.html
If you come, you will have a unique opportunity to talk about spiders, scorpion, solfugids, and much more with Arachnologists from all over the world. SO, you all want to come, right? you think I am strange now, right?

Ick spiders[:crazy2:]

Now I won't be able to sleep at night. When I was a kid, I remember feeling a tickle under my sheets. I pulled back the cover only to discover a BIG UGLY SPIDER! I STILL check my sheets before I go to bed. My Dad would be so embarrassed (He was an entomologist)

***Think good thoughts***Good spiders***Charlottes Web spiders***

Okay, I'm better now.[:charac4:]

If I came the the Spider Convention, I'd have to bring smelling salts along with me.

I know that spiders control other pests and all that stuff, I've been told many times, but alas, I can't see them as anything but CREEPY.:earseek:

So to all DISers who experience severe arachnophobia, I invite you to visit this thread often for support and guidance (as in, what hairspray freezes those ugly suckers to death best).;)

I'm so bad that I can't even read all the posts in this thread.

Why of course! Since this is a new support group, we are actively recruiting members. Please sit down and tell us your latest horror story involving those disgusting creatures.:teeth:

Hi, my name is Melissa, and I'm an arachniphobic...

My daughter's class went on a field trip to the Botanical Gardens last week. Part of the "tour" involved letting the kids touch a Daddy Longleg. My daughter was so excited. I had to put on my, "Wow, thats cool!" face. Talk about motherly love.:lovestruc
