Spg question.....upgrading with points??

Ok...bear with me on this one, ok? I've tried to read through the Swan/Dolphin thread, but its now at 125 pages and my eyes are starting to blur!!

I've joined SPG, made my ressies at the Dolphin, and am now getting ready to apply for the SPG Amex. My question is: do I call before arrival to apply points for an upgrade? Or is this done on check in? I'm confused about how the upgrade process works. Also, do I call the Dolphin directly or Starwood?? I'm currently booked with the gov't rate in a standard room.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Maybe we could post an "SPG for Dummies" thread with just bullets of quick information....???

I've upgraded when we check in. I think that's how you're supposed to do it, because it's based on availability.

We used points to upgrade to club level at the Dolphin by calling Starwood 5 days prior to arrival. I think we could have done it at check in as well . Hope this helps.
