We are thinking about booking the Swan using our SPG reward points at the 11,000/night rate, which gives us the resort view with the balcony. As Gold members, we would also get a free upgrade, if available.

If we got the standard room, I'd guess that would mean upgrading to the resort view with balcony. However, since we would already have that room, would we be entitled to an upgrade to an even better room, if available? If so, what might we reasonably hope for?

We are also Starwood Gold, and recently were upgraded from standard to resort view with balcony. I know I read (and someone on here also confirmed) that as a Gold member you cannot be upgraded to a suite - so I'm guessing if there are better room categories between the resort view with balcony that you are reserving, and suites, then if it's available you will be upgraded.

However on the last trip the hotel was full, and we got no upgrade at all. So if you want to be sure to have the resort view with balcony - reserve it! It's only 1000 points extra per night. Well worth it if the view is important to you.

I think suite upgrades are only availble for Starwood Platinum. I'm sure if I'm wrong someone will correct me!
