Speed Trap @ The Fort

I saw an Orange County Sheriff Deputy running radar between the 1100 and 1000 loop yesterday. I was surprised at seeing him but I guess there must be a speed problem going on and FW is letting OCSO handle it.

They were really shooting radar INSIDE the fort? I would have thought that was private property. Wonder if they would give a golf cart a ticket.

OCSO runs radar all around Disney property. I thought the roads leading into Disney were private but they're not. Even though that property may have originally been WDW but it's now public. I've seen OCSO in the fort before arresting someone. Not sure what for but they were assisting Disney security in some type of altercation. I'm sure Disney can get OCSO to do anything they need as needed lol. I'm thinking the fort has had a problem and they're just trying to stop it. Most people drive slow but I've seen a few who fly down the roads.

OCSO handles all law enforcement needs on Disney property. Disney Security can only legally handle so much as they are private security and have no police powers. OCSO handles everything Disney Security can't.

I knew that the main roads through WDW were public but I didn't think the roads through the Fort would be. They may just be helping Disney solve a speeding problem on private roads. Do you know if they are writing tickets, they may just be issuing warnings.

If you are required to show a pass or permit to enter an area it is not a "Public Road". I don't believe the Sheriff Department would be receptive to traffic enforcement within the FW area as it would be a PR nightmare. The streets within the WDW area, as a whole, are public streets since there are no limitations on who can drive on them. That's not to say they can't come in, they may even have been called because of a reckless driving complaint.

Disney pays to have OCSO on property 24 hours a day/7 days a week. The last number I heard (several years ago) was six deputies per shift, both uniform and investigators.

Under Florida law who can drive on a road is not the determining factor for public/private. Ownership is the only factor. Florida law also provides a system for a land owner (Disney) to give the authority to any law enforcement agency to enforce traffic laws on their private roads.

Disney "invited/hired" OCSO to patrol all areas of WDW shortly after 9/11. You will sometimes see a deputy(s) at the entrances of the theme parks & often will see them making rounds at the various resorts. It is not uncommon for deputy(s) to drive around FW.

I'm glad to see the added security & am glad to hear they are using radar (even if they are only giving the appearance of doing so). I've often seen speeders inside the Fort - and that includes some bus drivers!! A lot of kids (and adults) are riding bikes without the advantage of using their brains. So if the presence of sheriff's slows people down & saves a kid from getting hit/hurt, that's okay with me!

If you're not doing anything wrong, you have no need to worry.

Now...if they would only ticket the vagrant peacocks that try to steal beer from my premium site tap!!!

Nah! Disney must provide those to the officers. WDW has contracted deputies for years and I've never heard of muffin, doughnut or coffee shortages. We all know officers have to have their dougnuts and coffee! ::cop:

The last couple years I've seen patrol cars parked near the main intersection at the front, most of the time they seemed to just be there for the presence, as compared to actually running a speed trap. Not that they don't do that, but I would imagine it probably wouldn't go over to well if people were constantly getting pulled over (although obviously it would be safer ).

We didn't see any patrol cars while we were there but they should have. First off seen 2 kids driving down the road on a polairus ranger, and the day before the family left their toad was hit by a golf cart. A fellow camper seen it happen and run down the girl. She said she had a license, but anyway her dad came back and left a note. Lucky though no damage.

They already know me. I have many friends who are cops.

BTW, Dunkin is lousy, Tim Hortons is the place for donuts.

My dad was a cop for 25 years (Metro Dade in South Florida), I don't think I've ever seen him eat a donut...lol. Not saying that cops don't eat donuts, but I always found that rather ironic.
