My dgd will be in the 4th grade this year and he recieved his school supply list. Among the request were 3 packs of 12 American made pencils and Crayola crayons. We priced the pencils and they were $14.95 for 12 and the package stated American made:scared1: and what's wrong with Rose Art crayons?:confused3

IDK!!!!!

This is the first year I bought the "Ticonderoga" pencils ealry and guess what ......DD needs "Oriole" pencils! What the heck are they? On the list every other grade specifies Ticonderoga except for hers, grade 3.

Just cant win!

Crayola crayons are made in the USA, Pennslyvania I believe. I always buy American made pencils and pay way less than what you found

Not sure what an Oriole pencil is...

For the pencils I have no idea. For the crayons to be perfectly honest crayolas are better. Rose arts are really waxy so they don't color as nice or as easily. I hated rose arts as a kid and always wanted crayolas due to this.

Oh and at least around here the packs of I think its 24 crayolas tend to go on sale really cheap before school so you may be able to find a good deal on these.

I ignore the brand names on the lists (Fiskars scissors, specific dry erase markers, Ticonderoga pencils) and buy the pack of 24 #2 pencils for a buck and the crayons for 25 cents. Having quality pencils isn't going to stop my kid from losing/chewing/sharpening to a nub just for fun, etc. I'll happily spend extra $ for washable markers, but if the Rosearts are cheaper, I'm buying them over Crayola. No teacher has ever complained about my noncompliant cheapness, but my kids are in public schools.

I asked the teachers about the crayons a few years ago when DS started school. It has to do with the wax as mentioned in an earlier post and something about Crayola not rolling off the desk like other brands. At home, with 1 or 2 kids, crayons rolling is not a big issue. but when you have a class full of kids, it is a huge issue.
As far as the scissors, we have the fiskars and my kids have been able to use the same scissors for 3-4 years. After the first year I thought it was funny that they brought their scissors home at the end of the year. Now I love it. If you watch the sales the brands can me very cheap. I have not watched this year but past years I have bought the crayolas for only .20 a box and the fiskars scissors for under $1.00 from Office Depot or maybe Staples.

By "American made" for the pencils, they may mean something like Papermate brand. They are made in America and definately NOT 14.95 for 12.

"Paper Mate is the largest pencil manufacturer in the United States.

We produce millions of pencils everyday!"

And... Crayola is much better quality than the off brand crayons. They usually go on sale around now.

For art the require ticonderoga pencils here but for regular classwork any #2 pencil is fine!

Rose Art crayons are the WORST crayons you can get--they don't color half the time! What worse is when you bring in crayola and they "pool" the supplys and your kid ends up with rose art crap after you brought in good crayons! If I know a teacher is going to pool supplys I will send in crayola crayons for the pool but give my daughter her own pack of crayola to keep at her desk and use. Heck you can get crayolas for 25 cents a 24 pack on sale during back to school- I always buy extra to send in anyway!

All of my kids/grandkids go to public schools. I understand the difference between crayions. My issue is forcing families to purchase specific brands. If money isn't an issue go for it. I'm waiting for the school to say what type/brand backpack they have to have....

Yeah, there is a lot wrong with Rose Art crayons. I think it is too bad they're even offered for sale!
I like that they're asking for "made in the USA" products. I never really thought about it before.

I think where the pencils are made should not be allowed to be required.

Requiring something of a decent quality makes sense though--and Crayola crayons really are so much better than all the rest.

Paper mate pencils are made in the USA. And you can get a box of about 75 for around $7.

Oriole is another "brand" of pencil made by ticonderoga's parent company. They were the last "brand" by that company to be made in America but they are not anymore.

I remember having pre-perforated wide ruled notebook on dd's list one year. We found it on a trip to Canada!

I'll tell you why they want certain pencils. Kids will often want the ones that have designs on them and they are junk. They break all the time, the lead will slide right on out. The students will have to sharpen all freakin' day. Pencils are not made like they used to be.

Just make sure you buy decent pencils, not cheap ones or cute ones. They really shouldn't be too much more expensive than the other ones. GL!

My DD is going into 7th grade. Her list had latex free pencils :confused3. She likes the mechanical ones so that's what we bought. No one else s/b using my child's pencil so I don't understand the point of that.

I've learned over the years to use the list as a guide and not the bible. One year they asked for a specific brand/color folder that the manufacturer didn't even make :rotfl:.

As for RoseArt stuff, it really is junk compared to Crayola.

Toys R US had crayola crayons for .25 2 weeks ago.. so deals are to be found on them.

Here is a crazy list my grandmother send me for my cousins daughter. She is going into 2nd grade in a Florida public school:

Here is the issue I am having...May seem petty, but it is SO strange to me.

The crayola 24 pack are on sale at Wal-Mart for 40 cents. My kids'(Pre-K) list specifically says the 8 pack which is not on sale and costs 70 cents. :confused3

I feel like I HAVE to get the 8 pack, even though the 24 pack is a better deal. :lmao:

FYI--I just checked his week's Target flier online. USA Gold pencils (which I find info on saying are made in the USA when I google) are on sale for 99 cents a 12 pack.

At that age they might be planning to do a lot of work with specific, but basic colors (color the house blue, the sun yellow, etc) and not want the kids overwhelmed by too many options.

Rose Art crayons suck. Walmart and Target have 24 packs of Crayola crayons for 40 cents.

Just bought 12 American made pencils at either KMart or Target for $1.99.
