I am traveling w/ DH, DS23, DS19 and DD9 in August for my 50th Birthday and want to do something special. Which would be better since it's only 5 of us. Specialty Cruise or Pirates & Pals??

It depends on what type of experience you would like. The specialty cruises are private and you can order a cake, food, decorations, etc. Pirates and Pals is open to the general public and you will be in a boat with other families. It's a lot of fun and there is a huge dessert buffet, plus Capt. Hook, Smee, Peter Pan, but, again, you will be celebrating along with strangers.

Thanks for your feedback. We did the Specialty/Celebration cruise for our 20th Anniversary so I think we'll try the Pirates one :-)

Like the previous poster said, it depends on what kind of experience you'd like.

We've done the Pirates & Pals fireworks cruise and thought it was a blast. The meet & greet with Hook and Smee beforehand was a good time - when we went, Smee in particular was a delight. I have photos of him dancing with my little guy, who was 4 when we did the cruise. Your family can snack on the goodies, which were fine when we were there - nothing gourmet, but tasty treats. Then everyone piles onto the boat, which tootles off into the lagoon to get into position for the fireworks. While you're on the go, your "pirate guide," Patch, entertains everyone with jokes and stories and Disney-themed questions, stuff like that. Cute, silly fun. On our boat, there were a few families with older kids (our son was the youngest that night) plus a few couples without kids, so definitely a range of ages. The fireworks are lovely, and yes, the music is piped in. When the fireworks are over, the boat makes its way back to the dock, where a special character is waiting to greet everyone. That was another awesome experience for my son, who had a terrific time befriending a very kind and generous "friend of" the character. All in all, it was very fun.

We haven't done the private cruise, but it does sound wonderful. But for our money, well, we're planning on doing the Pirates & Pals cruise again on our upcoming trip.... :)

Hands down, speciality cruise! My family, joined by my parents, enjoyed one on our last trip. It was so awesome to have that special attention and an amazing view of the fireworks. With there being eight of us, it was also cheaper than the Pirate and Pals cruise. They provide snacks and drinks for the speciality cruise as well, and encouraged us to take all the left overs with us. It was December, so it was a bit chilly, they provided blankets and towels to keep us all warm. We got to hear a few stories from each of the Magic Kingdom resorts as well as information on the long closed down water park. We had a terrific boat guide, we definitely made some very special memories that night.
