Special edition Magic Bands?

I am wondering why some of you or if any of you buy the special edition Magic Bands. Do you purchase them to use or just to keep and collect?

If you do actually use them, what is their life span? I have quite a few of the regular "free" bands but never really use them twice.

Don't plan to buy any special edition ones, but curious how long do the regular bands continue to function? Do they have an internal battery and is there some way to replace the battery once it stops working?

I have no clue. I always just get new ones with each visit. If Disney ever starts to charge for the bands, (and I think they will at some point) I will keep up with them better for re-use.

So far none of my bands have had batteries die (oldest band is from summer 2016). I collect the LE bands that come in boxes (no d&b though). I display the boxes and in the park use the bands. The bands make the touch points light up different colors depending on the band/park and they make special noises. I also like the designs. The bands have an infinite touch point life. The battery part is related to long range RFID which is things like on ride pictures and the on ride interactive elements like your name showing up in the EE queue.
