Hi everyone! Just returned from my conference / WDW trip with friends who have a three year old who has just recently been diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes. I wanted to thank everyone on this board who gave suggestions, especially those who reminded me of badshoe.com's great website on WDW with diabetes. It was incredibly helpful to my friend in her planning.

Most of all, I wanted to tell you about our experience at 1900 Park Fair. (Not sure about spelling?) Anyway, our extraordinary waitress -- Kitty -- looked after us all evening and told us about her own experiences raising a child with type 1. (He's now a REALLY successful adult!) That was incredibly heartwarming to my friends. And the chef came out to give my friends tips on the buffet -- even taught them some things they didn't already know -- like that Asian food isn't great for diabetics because it can be pretty heavy in "hidden" sugars. (At least the Asian foods he had prepared on the buffet.) He also said, "Stay away from all the desserts, but don't worry. I've got the perfect dessert for her!" So when we were ready for dessert, he brought out the most amazing concoction that was absolutely beautiful and absolutely perfect for a type 1 kiddo. We have the best pictures of her diving into it. (Every kid in the room was going -- hey, where'd she get THAT? even though it didn't have ANY sugar or carbs in it.) He came out and served it to her and laughed and talked. It was a pretty amazing experience.

Afterwards, I looked at my friends and said, "Now you understand. This is why our family comes here so often." They did.

Thanks for helping us set this up.

Julie

Thank you for sharing your experience. It's always great hearing great stories like this.

While our last 1900 PF experience was ok, it wasn't great (it worried me that I had to correct mistakes the chef was making in his knowledge of the allergens in the packaged food). It sounds like you might have gotten Chef TJ, or at a minimum his influence is being seen in the restaurant. I'm really hoping that's true because we have another ADR there in February.

Yup, that's why we all keep going back. WDW chefs are the BEST as are the peeps here who report back!!

That's the 2nd great story about 1900 Park Fair's handling of special diets I've heard this week. I may have to add it to our "to-do" list. Thanks for sharing. :goodvibes
