Special 9/1/08 Cruise Continued

I reminded him (won't go into too many details here) of something we witnessed. We were at an event that would draw mostly tween girls and overheard a discussion between security personnel. The head of security was handing his staff mug shots of a pedophile who was known to be in the crowd. It made my skin crawl. Sadly anything that attracts children also attracts creepy people. :(

Exactly my point! It kills me when people say, "but it's Disney (or Disney Cruise Line), it's made for children, there's lots of families around, etc."

I always tell DH, if I was a pedophile, that's where I would go to get my victims! Plenty to choose from! Although, on a cruise, it's not like they could get away easily, so they would do better at WDW, where they could victimize a child, and then leave the park and not be caught. But still...you just don't know about people. I know you can never be 100% protected, but I do want to take sensible precautions.

So glad you posted. I had forgotten about your DD being on this cruise. I have a 14 year old DD with DS.

Obviously neither of my DDs will have the ability to check themselves out of the lab!

My answer was "Do you let her roam around MK or hotels alone?" :(

I do have to admit, though, on our last trip I allowed DD some freedom around the hotel. We were in Grand Cayman a week ago, and the hotel we stayed at had a courtyard area, surrounded by hotel buildings, that had a small walkway that led to the outdoor pool and the beach. It was a turtle lagoon, and DD was fascinated by the turtles and iguanas. I allowed her to be in the courtyard area by herself, as long as she did not go past a certain point towards the pool or beach. Our room was ground floor, and opened into the courtyard area, so I knew she was within about 75 feet of the hotel room. I could stick my head out the sliding door and call her, and make sure she was still there and OK.

On the last day there, DH went snorkeling on the beach. DD and I went to check on him, and then DD said she was going back to the room. After she left, I decided to stay on the beach and watch him snorkel. After about 15 minutes, DH and I walked back toward the hotel, and saw DD waiting to talk to someone at the towel desk. She couldn't find me in the courtyard, and knew she was not allowed to walk around the hotel, or go to the beach, so she couldn't see me sitting there no more than 30 feet from where she was. She was going to report her parents as lost!

I also have a DD who will be 9 yrs. old at cruisetime. I do not plan on letting her check herself out of the kids club. She is responsible, but not "worldly" enough to handle unusual situations. I also have a just turned 13 year old DS who would be eligible to go to the Stack. While he looks forward to this, I am really considering having him stay back with the 12 year old group. I know for a fact there are dances that START at 11 pm at the Stack. Do I feel comfortable letting him wander in at 1 am? Not a chance! A 17 year old lives a totally different life than my 13 year old. Has anyone heard about changing the ages of the clubs? I know I heard some chatter about this awhile ago. Also, if anyone else has a son around the same age who is not planning on giving them the freedom to come and go as they please, let me know.
Looking forward to this cruise!

When we took our 3 nieces, and Nephew
couple of Decembers a go!
We put them all in one cabin, ours was down the hall..

We told them Pairs, oldest, 14...

When we saw them on the ship the twin girls had split up :furious: .. one wanted to take the stairs and the other the elevator!

This then cost them!
Sometime in there cabin...
Almost missing the pirate night fireworks and show!

Very upset with them! :furious:
They could have anything they wanted !!

and the one thing we asked was not met! :furious:

They do not like making us unhappy! :)
as we take very good care of them!

Believe me, the rest of the cruise they did not go anywhere unless they had a buddy!! :dance3:

Hey everyone! My plan this week is to get together a list of everyone who told me that they wanted to be linked for late dining and post the list here, giving anyone who isn't on the list a chance to speak up. Do we have a volunteer for early dining? If not, I can do that too, but would prefer if someone else could.

Have a great day!!

Hi Tracy,
I mentioned this on the repo post - that was supposed to be a pm!! Anyway, I can't volunteer until July when I'm back from the Mexican Riviera cruise. But, with your guidance I'm willing!! Let me know.

Hello... I have a DD that is 11... We are going with family and my DD will have her cousin with her and they are the same age... I have decided myself to give her a little more freedom this go around... My DH and I have have set down a few ground rules for her and she is pretty responsible... We have walkie talkies to commuicate... The last time we went she was only 10 and she was by herself most of the time... I do believe that 2 is better that 1...

Michelle

I have a question for cruisers with pre-teen kids...I'm debating the whole "freedom to roam the ship" issue. I saw it come up again on the regular cruise board. My DD will be 10, and has never had that freedom before (and this is our 6th DCL cruise!). Although she is a responsible kid, she is also a little scatterbrained, and I'm just not sure what kind of freedom to give her. Trust me, if I couldn't find her one day on the ship for even 15 minutes, I would be in a total panic and would not get over it! She went missing in Walmart for about 90 seconds one time, and I cried for an hour!

How much freedom are you planning on giving your preteens? I don't know if I want her checking herself out of the lab, but maybe if she wanted a drink from the beverage station, I could let her go by herself? That way, I know where she started, where she was headed, where she should end up, and how long she should be gone. (Overprotective much?)

Or maybe if we are on deck, she could go back to the cabin by herself if she wanted.

I already let her stay at home for short periods alone (run to the grocery store, etc.), and when we go to Palo, if she doesn't want to go to the lab that night, she can stay in the cabin and watch movies.

here is the link to the kid thread, sounds like a bunch of younger cruisers...
could do al ittle chatting...

Someone posted about using Dollar before and I just found out that Dollar now has a location in Port Canaveral across from Avis with a free shuttle to the port. :thumbsup2

GREAT NEWS Tracy! Thanks! Do you happen to know the name of the city to enter? I've been round and round. Now if I could only get them to waive the extra fee for dropping off in a different location. :rotfl2:

Hi Georgie,

It was Cape Canaveral or Port Canaveral. Definitely not Cocoa Beach.

Avis uk is offering a great deal for inclusive car in USA at the moment worth checking out.

I hear ya all!! My son was almost taken IN FRONT OF US!!!! A little girl came up to him and us and said I am going to take him to get ice cream! We said no, she argued for a while then finally left! We called the police and they brought her back and yelled at her. Who know where she would have taken him.

We are going to Epcot Sunday before the cruise and are planning some wine tasting in Germany, Italy and France. Any suggestions on some GOOD wine to try?:drinking1

That's a wonderful room , Melissa -- I had it for 11 nights in the Med last summer! Nice quiet location, too.
