Speaking of teacher discounts at the Swan and Dolphin...

I am a teacher in MA. and just last week we had a note posted on the front door of our high school saying that on that particular day death would conquer our school and he would be in with a gun if not two. THEN THE VERY NEXT DAY in the town next door, a student came to school with a gun. AND THIS IS IN THE QUIET LITTLE SUBURBS OF SOUTHERN MA. Dont tell me in todays world teachers dont risk there lives.

And here in Ohio where most schools are financially strapped beyond broke, my dh's school (where he teaches) had a steel beam in the gym fall and nearly squash 2 9th grade girls and 2 teachers. Its a miracle, how it JUST missed them when it very slightly bumped the top of the basketball hoop's support wires. My job at the local mall has no such occupational hazards...the mall has enough money to stay fixed up.

BTW, here, my dh (with most of his Masters credits AND head of department AND coaching baseball) is not even halfway to 6 digits. As for rewarding police and firemen, perhaps they qualify as civil employees. Also, there certainly ARE many places that already give them perks. I grew up in the household of one, and was married for a while to another.

They also have a government discount for anyone who works for a state, federal, or local government.

When I enquired about the government discount, I was told it was only FL government discount only by email. :confused3

For those who are Cops and Firefighters, etc. Here is the link to the S/D revervations site from Dream Unlimited

https://www.dreamsunlimitedtravel.com/dreamsres/sd.cfm

If you click on Check for Discounts you will find Military/Government Employee

Then you will see under that line, Do you qualify for these discounts? this is the paragraph that appears for:

Government Discounts
Those eligible would be clients that work for the government, whether it is national, State or local government. This includes firemen, police, and any other branch of the government national, state or local. It also includes foreign governments as well. Clients must have a valid government id or will you will require a Letter on official stationary from the supervisor along with a recent pay stub. You must present the id at check-in to qualify for the discounted rate. Please note that proof of eligibility is required to receive any discount. Failure to produce such proof at check-in will result in hotel charging the full, regular rate for that room.

Hope this helps anyone who has questions.

P.S. I homeschool my son do I get a discount? I don't receive any pay for that, we are a one income family. JUST KIDDING  my reward is knowing what my son is learning, where he is and that he is safe. That is all I need in life. Of course Disney too.

A 6 digit salary for teachers?!!! I'd hate to see the cost of living in those places
In the district I go to school in a first year teacher now gets 29k. My physics teacher told us that a teacher who's been teaching at that school for 30 years just now hit 60k. And this is an expensive part of the state to live in. The teachers in that district worked for a year with no contract, finally ended after 3 weeks of "work to rule" the closest a teacher can get to going on strike. The school board wanted to give them a 2% raise. That's not even close to the inflation rate.
Teachers are totally underpaid and underappreciated. As are nurses, and government employees. I think it's great that the S/D offer discounts to them.
And btw my mom's a teacher. From bomb threats to breaking up fights she puts her safety on the line everyday. Maybe not to the extent of a cop or a firefighter, but public schools are still dangerous places to be. The amount of work she has is insane. Much as she'd like me to have a career in education I know I could not handle it. It takes quite a person to fill any of the roles that get discounts at the S/D.

Here's something ironic.....

A few threads over, a poster is getting blasted because she thinks it would be nice to get discounts if you have a family of 5 and want one room. Several posters are commenting that it was a choice the OP made to have the 3rd child, and now they'll just have to pay for it! Then on this thread, people are saying that teachers (and others as mentioned) absolutely should get a discount because of the profession they chose.

Not going to draw a conclusion on which side I think is right or wrong....we can all do that for ourselves. Just thought it was an interesting comparison.

6 figure income??? BAWAWWHAAW! I guess I need to move to LI. I am getting a puny $32,000 while spending big bucks on that Master's...something that is required if I want to get a permanent certificate! However, after 6 years as a teacher's aid (making 10,000 annually, talk about underpaid!!!) I feel like a millionaire! OT, sorry, but I had to throw it in there.

My sister is a teacher in Northeast, where the cost of living is so high she lives in a basement apartment for 3 times the price of some peoples monthly mortgages posted in the "most spent on room" thread, she is a highly educated, dedicated teacher who is going for her required masters which will cost $45k/yr for 2 years - full time, to keep a job w/ a salary in high $30k's (including the income from the summer school she teaches). She teaches in a private school where the tuition is $55k/yr per student - $20k more than her annual salary. :earboy2: ..and has no budget for schoool supplies - pays for them out of her own pocket from her small salary. :sunny: ..I have a new respect for teachers (granted Im sure there are some oldtimers just waiting for retirement...) but when my kids get into school I will be sure to be grateful for and respect their teachers....regarding the discount, if my sister could afford to go on one of the peak times during school break, she wouldn't, as shes had her fill of kids during the school term! :teeth: Are there lots of occupations that deserve free/discounted vacays, sure...but Disney is a business...I think the main reason they offer discounts to teachers is the whole school vacay schedule, I think theyre deserving of it and good for them :) :flower:
