Speaking of google... Everyone beware!!

A friend sent this to me & I took my number out. You may want to do the same. I did not put in an email address. I realize some of you only have cell phones, but you may know someone who doesn’t want all the psychos in this world to have a detailed map to their house.



Type your telephone number into Google's search bar, click the search button....MapQuest returns with a physical location of your phone number.

People could use this feature to locate your home address, and
receive explicit directions on how to get there from anywhere in the country. My name was in there...so I removed it. You can too...do this: Type in your full phone number....using dashes...like this: 555-123-4567 If your number appears in the mapping database, an icon resembling a telephone will appear next to the entry on the results page. Click on this icon and it will take you to a page containing a description of the service, and a link to request your number be removed from the database.

The address to do this is www.google.com

Mine did not come up. The only thing I can think of is we have had an unlisted number for the last 20 years. I wonder if this came out of the white pages.

<font color=navy>I purposely didn't put my address in the phone book, so all that comes up is the general city. Good thing for me that my phone # belongs to a block in the neighboring city, so it doesn't even have my correct one in the listing.

Removing this info from google doesn't completely solve this problem. Reverse phone number lookup information is available not only on the internet, but also on CDroms that you can easily (and legally) purchase. I believe that the only way to prevent your name from being included in these lists is to have an unlisted phone number.

We are not unlisted, but it doesn't have our address in the phone book.

When I googled our phone #, all it had was our #, my DH's name, and the town we live in, but no address!

John has a very valid point! Your address can easily be found many other ways as well. As long as you are listed in the phone book, you can be found.

Saddly, removing it from google will not solve the problem-just make it take longer for some one to find you. Every phone book publisher in the US has on line lookup and most have that service connected to Mapquest. I could find any of you by knowing a first and last name. The only way to completely eliminate this risk is to have an unlisted phone number. If your address is not listed your name, phone number and where you live will still come up.

Even getting an unlisted phone number may not help. I have found unlisted phone numbers and adresses on the internet when I needed to contact friends. It just takes a little more time, but it can be done.

Also, once you have you number unlisted, it literally takes years for the information to vanish from the internet.

Yes, just removing the number is not good enough (but help). You should get credit reports regularly and have your credit monitored. That's probably the only way you can catch any credit theft.

For those who are "frightened" about this, are you just as frightened about it being in the phone book? And what exactly are you frighted about?

It's not always accurate. I looked up friends who have moved from their residence over a year ago. Their phone number and old address are showing up. When I look them up in the white pages, it has their current address with that same phone number. They did take the phone # with them. You can also find addresses through public records in your county as far as who owns what home, what they paid, taxes they paid, etc. It's horrible they put this stuff on the internet. It's "public knowledge" according to them.
