We've been in our house 10 years - and I have just had a great idea to make some unusable space in our spare bedroom/office usable.

With my best description...

The room has a large regular closet. On each side of the closet is an alcove that is 24" wide and 27" deep. These 2 alcoves really serve no purpose - because nothing fits in them. It was suggested by well meaning friends to "just put up shelves in the alcoves" but I don't want spaces to accumulate junk, dust without serving a specific purpose.

My idea is to reconfigure this space, and essentially move the closet all the way down and essentially combine the 2 alcoves into 1 space - which would give me a space that is 48" wide by 27" deep. This would be a great space for a desk -which right now is in an odd spot in the room.

The alcoves serve no purpose - since nothing fits in them.

Has anyone "moved walls" a little bit? I am assuming this would be a fairly inexpensive kind of job - realizing that it would need to be recarpeted. The current wallpaper was for my DD's "baby" room - so it needs to "go" as it doesn't match the bedding that is currently in.

Any thoughts?

You need to consider if the wall is load bearing at all ( would not think so) also are there any electrical outlets around the area? My DH has moved outlets before, so it can be done, but how comfortable are you with doing it yourself? At best it is a matter of demolition and then setting a frame and putting up drywall joint tape and compound, sanding it down and painting. Have fun if you decide to do it!

Microcell - you make it sound sooo easy.

The wall is not load bearing.

There are electrical outlets involved - but I love to do that type of stuff. I would probably increase the number of outlets and add an overhead light in the desk area as well.

Well, watching my husband do it is easy... for me anyway. Seroiusly, I think it is fun to do that kind of stuff, so it does not seem that hard. :teeth:

If you DIY it it shouldnt be too expensive, as you may be able to reuse the existing studs and doors, If you have it professionally done,, get ready, its goingto be priceyer than you think. Todays material costs are through the roof, and labor is going up as well( I own a remodeling firm, We are being charged 20 and hour by one carpenter that was working for 10 a year ago, painters went up even worse.) Carpet is extremely over priced right, now. I would consider a vynal tile floor with a throw rug or two, Have fun. (another note, if you start diy and then call a contractor, be prepared to watch them start over, coming behind someone else is a great way to make aa job twice as hard.)
