Has anyone used the space saver bags for their luggage? Do the clothes come out more wrinkled than normal? If they work but add wrinkles, maybe I'll just use them for stuff like towels and the laundry that doesn't get washed for the way home to make more room for souveniers. What do you guys think?

I thought about using the space saver bags for our last trip, but one thing stopped me... how would I pack to come home? I didn't want to have to track down a housekeeper and ask to borrow her vacuum cleaner.

They have bags at Wal-mart and Target that don't require a vacuum. I was surprised to see these kind. That's why I was wondering how well they work. Do they really work without a vacuum to suck all the air out? And I'm wondering how much room they really save.

I use space saver bags all the time. I usually put towels in them and then use them for all my dirty laundry. They do save space, but for some weird reason, I think they make your suitcase really heavy. It might be all the stuff you can compress then you think you have extra room so you add more in your suitcase  I have used them for the kids clothes , and if you are careful in packing I don't see any more wrinkles than normal. I don't leave the clothes in for an extended time. Good luck!

Just saw the posts before me---my bags were from QVC and don't require a vaccum. They work just fine. You put your things in and then I lay them on the floor and squish out all the air(this usually involves me looking really odd, laying on my bag, using all my weight to push the air out--but it works). You can then roll the bag like a sleeping bag to get the rest of the air out.

I have not used actual space saver bags, but when DD and I traveled to WDW prior to moving her, I packed her close in gallon sized zip loc bags. She was only 6, so the clothes (short/t-shirts) were not large. It was amazing how much space it saved even just with regular zip locs. when I rolled and got all the air out. It also kept things really organized! Something I have a problem with when I travel!

I think space savers would be a great help in packing! I would think they would not wrinkle too much if the stuff was placed neatly in the bags.

We bought the actual space saver brand bags for our last trip in December. They don't require a vacuum, you just 'roll' the air out. They really DID make a difference in the amount of space we had in our suitcases. I didn't notice more wrinkles than when we didn't use them. I will be using them for all my future trips.

We use the gallon and 2.5 gallon glad zipper bags. Work just as well, and easy for us to pack one day's outfits in a bag, so DS can easily go get his stuff for the day.

I've used both the space saver bags and zip-lock. The space savers are great for storing big items such as fluffy comforters and such around the house. But for travel, I prefer the zip-lock bags. They work just as well and are a fraction of the cost. I just sit on them to let the air out. I put each outfit in a bag complete with socks, underwear and hair accessories. You can also fit a princess dress in the gallon-size if you squish enough. I label the front of each bag with the date and place to wear (i.e., Wednesday Hoop Dee Doo). There's an added bonus for us - it keeps DD from wearing four outfits a day (she's a quick-change artist).

Hehehe, I don't plan on buying any princess dresses for myself, but the DH might want one. :rotfl: This is his first trip too afterall! :thumbsup2

WARNING!

I have seen people at the airport who have managed to go over the airline weight limits by using these bags.

We have used both Space saver and Ziploc. The SS bags were a lot of money, we got them and Bed Bath Beyond and no doubt, paid full price. The next trip I got wise and used the method suggested by another poster, using a bag a day per kid, so DH could help out with the morning race. When we went to Mexico in Feb, I got the new, huge, Ziploc bags at Target. They have l and xl and come three to a box. I just but the stuff in, sealed it all but 1/4 way, rolled the air out and sealed. When we got to
exico, I used the hotel's pants hanger and the the giant bag. I am not sure the Space Savers anr worth the extra cost, since that is also the way you have to seal them.

We've been using these for 3 years now. Wouldn't travel without them. You wouldn't believe the space it frees up and clothes, to me, come out no more wrinkled then without. We got some of ours from the mall stalls, as seen on tv, and bed bath and beyond. No vacuum required, just pack, seal, fold over and I press my knees against the bag and a bed and out comes all the air. First trip wife didn't believe me until I showed her my suitcase and it looked half full, I rechecked my packing list and it was all in there. She got bags for our next trip real quick.

I bought some for our last trip to WDW in Dec 2005. I already use packing cubes & envelopes, so these didn't really do much more for me. I did use them for things I didn't care about wrinkles in. To me, they weren't worth the cost. The Packing Cubes/Folders, however, are worth every penny.

They work great.. They do wrinkle some.. nothing that hanging in the bathroom during the shower wouldn't handle..

The only down side is... What it does to the weight of suit case.. You can pack almost twice as much in the suit case thus doubling your weight.. not a problem if you are driving.. but if you are flying.. watch out for the weight..

I have gotten ours ready to go.. we have the roll type.. not the vac. type..

Have fun!

We got married at Disney in December. We had to make the trip in a borrowed Ford Windstar with all the gifts for Christmas, all the gifts for the bridal party, all the DIY projects, my dress (like 45 lbs), suitcases for the rest of vacation, welcome baskets for all our guests. Let's remember the two cats and a dog for good measure, too... and everything they needed to travel with. I will swear to you there is no way it would have all fit had we not had the Space Saver bags.

Granted, those things got super heavy and hard as rocks, but that was the only way we got ourselves and our poor animals South with any remnant of a back seat for them.

I would be cautious about packing them for flying... you can fit a lot more into a much smaller space. Southwest has gotten really strict on baggage weight. We packed one bag between us for one of our planning trips in July. We were 3 lbs over and had no extra bag or no time to go buy one. We paid $50 for those 3 lbs, despite the fact there was 2 of us and 1 bag. They'd rather have to lift the extra bag than one 3 lbs over... Still in a huff over that one. The lady at the counter only made it worse though.

I also use the space saver bags for travel. Ours were purchased at a Samsonite outlet store at the nearby outlet mall, and seemed to be a better deal than buying other places. I like to take a couple of empty ones to put laundry in - it is amazing how much room the dirty clothes take up on the way home. I have used the bags for several trips and they hold up well.

What are packing cubes and envelopes? I'm picturing you putting clothes in manilla letter envelopes!

I love space bags. I can see how people can go over the weight limit though. I always fly with a smaller size suitcase and a backpack carry-on. I've never had a problem going over the weight limit, but I do remember having a tricky time traveling w/DD18 last summer after all of her shopping. We both had to wear the 2 pairs of platform sandals home, because they would not fit in either our suitcases or backpacks. I thought I might have to buy another suitcase to get all of it home!

Has anyone ever used one of these bags to pack a pillow? Due to neck problems, I would very much like to take my own pillow on our next trip (we're flying).
