Space Mountain single rider no more?

It doesn't have to do with someone standing an extra minute so someone can load. It has to do with the timing of the entire ride. If it takes me too long to get in the seat, the brakes are applied to the entire ride bringing it to a halt. If I load too slowly, they have to stop the car coming in behind the one I am to have to wait longer, making the one behind it to have to brake in an earlier zone, causing the car behind it to have to stop, etc... causing an entire cascade.

I have watched a cascade stop on Matterhorn because a family couldn't decide who was riding in front of who. It just took a few extra seconds for the ride to E-stop, and my daughter got to sit in a bobsled over Tinks area for about 20 mins as they had to release each car to finish the run, followed by a reset. Ride was down 45 mins.
Wow lol! I hate to say it, but high speed coasters are definitely not a old man's game, for a variety of reasons. Or a bickering family's game, for that matter. Move it along, people! ;)

In defense of the older gentleman in a wheel chair, we did it with my dad. He was in his 70s, in a wheelchair, and wanted to ride Screamin'. But all of us knew we had to get him in and out fast. So my brother and son were in charge. The lifted him in fast, pushed him over (knowing he would be on the exit side), my son rode behind him, my brother beside him, and after the ride, my son and brother just power lifted him out and back to his chair. (I stayed with the chair so we could move faster.) He loved that ride and it was a big memory for all of us.

Just wanted to share an update from today of why we need single rider back. So many empty seats that could be filled. Here’s a picture of a car with 3 empty seats. I saw many cars with at least 2 seats empty. So frustrating. I have reached out to Disney and even had a call follow up from an email I sent Ken Pottrock. No change has been made and they just don’t seem to care. As I type this I saw another car with 3 empty seats. If this was truly done to encourage me to buy Genie+, it isn’t working. It makes me want to not renew my Magic Key actually.
Yes this!! In my last 3 days at the parks there were T O N S of empty seats that single rider could have filled. The lack of single rider here doesn't make me more excited about Genie+ - it makes me grind my teeth and vow to only get it when my group wants it!

I don’t feel there is enough space and as someone who is 6’ 4”, I already feel cramped enough without needing to get jammed next to someone else.
This is such an old comment like really old but I have to comment on it

My husband is over 6'5"..he gets jammed next to someone else often but he loves single rider. Now at DLR (the topic of this thread) I can go on Space Mountain with him but over at WDW I cannot due to motion sickness issues. It's the least of his concerns when he's at a theme park because truly just being able to ride the ride is enough. He was bummed that at WDW there's virtually no single riders. At Universal Orlando there's plenty and he had a blast! He's taller than you has a long torso and long legs and he would take single rider any day!

I get not wanting to sit with people you don't know but it's an unrealistic expectation at a theme park. Doesn't mean you have to like it (that's fair not to). I think it was nice you apologized for the rando comment, I don't think it does the discussion any good to make it out like people who ride a ride solo are somehow inherently creepy. And not every person who rides alone is there alone as well. They can be there with other people who for one reason or another do not ride a given ride with them.

And to interject some humor my husband gets jammed next to someone for life..aka me..his wife ;) and I always take the middle seat of the plane..I feel like I should get an award for that :) :)

I also wonder if the empty seats are because some people request to be socially distanced from a stranger. I imagine a CM would honor that.

Not to dwell on a potentially sensitive topic, but one reason for empty seats may be to limit the weight of the ride vehicle.

When the vehicle leaves the loading platform, if it’s too heavy, instead of going ahead to the right, it’ll get diverted to the left to unload. I know because I’ve been in the vehicle when that has happened (it wasn’t me, I swear!). The riders are then put back in the loading area to be re-loaded with better weight distribution.

The CMs are good at keeping quiet about it and not making a big deal, but when I chatted with the CM she told me that if there’s multiple larger people in the vehicle, or even if there’s a vehicle that gets loaded with all adults and no kids or smaller people, then the ride operators are supposed to leave some seats open.

I never knew this! That is a good point. Thanks for sharing

This is super interesting and something I had never thought of. So, having no single riders is a positive in this instance as well because it lessens the likelihood and hassle of needing to reload.

Yeah. Obviously they can still use single rider to fill seats when necessary, but if there are empty seats in the vehicle it may not necessarily have otherwise been a filled seat due to vehicle weight.

This makes sense and I never thought about it before. I do remember when the IASW boats used to get stuck sometimes due to the fact that when the original ride was built, people were slimmer. They had to redo all of the canals to make them deeper and they made all new boats as well.

Sometimes it’s this. I’ve also noticed lately that the CMs that are loading aren’t good at doing the loading Tetris and this ride has such a tight loading dock that if they are looking for parties of 2 or 4 it can get tough to fill the car properly. Additionally space is on a timer where the vehicle has to leave the load station in a certain number of seconds or it cascades to them shutting down. Matterhorn is also like this. This may be why on either of these rides they may pull a loaded vehicle off to the side prior to unload. I once had the unfortunate experience of riding Matterhorn 3 times in a row without getting off because our vehicle got side pulled twice before unload and was not allowed to unload when they put us back on the track due to timing issues.
