When I was there on the 3rd, a CM told me that Space Mountain would be closed for refurb for THREE YEARS???

Has anyone else heard anything or know when this might happen?

Wow - if that's true, they must be totally rebuilding the ride. It would be hard to imagine going to WDW and not being able to ride Space Mountain!

Three years? They could tear it down, build it again and still have time left over.

Is it true? I'm guessing No. ;)

I don't know that it's true, but that's about how long it was closed at Disneyland. They tore down the entire inside and re-built the ride. The new SM at DL has much more realistic looking space images and the ride is much smoother, but the ride track and the queue are exactly the same.

It took nearly 3 years for the one at Disneyland to be redone and they didn't rebuild the whole ride. They kept the same track layout, just refurbished it, added alot of new special effects, new sound system. I couldn't believe it took that long either and considering the MK version was already 2 years older before the DL refurb began I definately believe it will take 3 years.

I just looked it up on another site, and it said that, according to a CM, in 2007 Space Mountain is going to go into a total reburishing. They are going to recreate the ride completely. They said they needed to update it since it is such an old ride.

Space mountain is one of the slowest roller coasters today, reaching a top speed of 30 mph, so maybe they are going to make it faster? With the Disney team doing the construction, I can only imagine how much better it will be after refurbishment.

My son will be heartbroken...he LOVES SM. By the time it reopens he will be 10, he may have forgotten about it by then! :lmao:

Some rides are just classic Disney.

I think Space Mountain is the only ride in all of Disney World that I would be upset to see them change. Refurbing the ride is one thing...but changing/upgrading...no.

That ride is perfection, as is. Don't get me wrong...I love the thrilling roller coasters at parks like Cedar Point, but for my money, Disney World Space Mountain is about as good as it gets. Even if it only goes 30mph and doesn't loop. It's just got that old retro rickety feel that you can't beat. I love the feeling of being afraid to put my arms up because I'm afraid they are going to hit something above me.

That being said, the only constant is change... :confused3

Are you sure we're talking about Disney WORLD because I heard something about a refurbishment of Space Mountain at Disneyland...
Space Mountain at DL was refurbished and has been open for a while already.

Sounds good to me. I hope they "plus it". Nothing is ever perfect, I hope to see it better than ever in 2010 (or whenever it is done).

IT'S ABOUT TIME is all I can say!

When I went on it last year, after not being on it in apporx 9 years, I thought it was definitly time for a makeover! Don't get me wrong, this ride brings back happy memories of my childhood, however how can Disney compete with Universal if they do not keep updating some of their older rides to coincide with the latest technology. Space Mountain can be way cooler than it is now and still have that classic feel. I am all for the refurb and can't wait to see what they do with it :thumbsup2

Is it going to be refurbished or is it going to be 'replaced' with a new ride by the same name? If they're going to give it the Disneyland Paris treatment, ok....it could take a while. If it's being spruced up and updated, 3 years is a bit long.

We're hearing it will be down for a while by mid-year 2007 for new lighting and sound, some theming will be added, etc, (none of this confirmed by Disney, of course, just by reliable contacts) but we're not hearing a total re-do and we're not hearing 3 years.

Just as a note, Disneland's ride was down for 2 years, not 3.

Well.. I won't be back after this last trip in December for awhile.. until at least after I get my Masters degree.. but the new space mountain would sure make a great graduation trip :-D

I wish they would leave at least 1 thing like it was from the beginning. Changing now and then is OK, but leave SOMETHING! This is the last thing that I can say is still the same from when I was little. :guilty:

(Well, I guess if you count Peter Pan and The Jungle Boat

It took a very long time to re-do Disneylands version and for the changes to be made. I am all for the re-hab. It needs it so bad. I am willing to wait 3 years for it to kick butt just like DL's.

I love space mountain but I just came back from Disneyland and their space mountain is incredible. It feels like your in space, I sat in the first row and you can't see the track or the other cars. The music is awesome and it seems so fast. They get 6 people per car instead of 3 so the line goes faster. It is worth waiting 2 yrs. to have a change like that.

I hope the refurbishment rumors are true although I hope it does not take three years! This used to be one of my favorite rides but it has gotten too rough. It is like the track is getting old. At first I thought it was just me - but I have heard the same thing from other people - they think it has gotten rougher too.
