Hi All - I have a friend going to Disneyland in September 2009. While looking at the calendar for hours, etc., it noted that Space Mountain would be closed for "Holiday Install". Anybody hear anything????pirate:

There is going to be a Halloween overlay on SM - I think it is scheduled to open 9/25 with the rest of the Halloween stuff.

Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy is going to be the name of it, I think.

We are planning a mid-November trip. Has anyone heard if the Halloween overlay will continue through to Christmas, or is there a chance that SM will be shut down to switch back while we are there?

I am not sure. This is all new territory for us. This is the first time we have ever had the Halloween overlay for Space Mountain so we don't know what they will do. With Haunted Mansion Holiday, there is a clear reason why it extends from Halloweentime season all through Christmastime - because the Nightmare Before Christmas story focuses on the 'two holidays colliding.' My guess is that SM Ghost Galaxy will be a big hit for DLR, and maybe, MAYBE, they would leave it open for a an extra few days, just to make the fans happy. But I wouldn't count on it yet. Immediately after the Halloween stuff comes down, they start putting up all the Christmas stuff to get ready for November 20, and I have a hunch that they may add in a couple of extra holiday things for us to enjoy this year. So Ghost Galaxy may stick out like a sore thumb in a sea of Christmastime decorations. But we will see.

Ditto to what Sherry said, but I think I read that if SM:GG is a success, they will actually leave most of the set up on the ride, but return the ride to its normal ride. That way it's easier set up for future years. That being said, the time that Space will be down after being Ghost Galaxy will probably be very short if they are leaving a lot of the stuff around the track (you just won't be able to see it when the ride is running in its normal state), and I'd assume by mid-November it'd be up and running again.

Thanks to you, and Sherry, for the info. We would love to see Ghost Galaxy, but it is even more important that we not miss out on SM completely. Let's hope you are right, and it's a quick turnaround!

I heard someone say that yes, they were planning to leave the Ghost Galaxy overlay bits up behind the scenes, so that the next switchover would just take a couple days.

Though I reckon it could have just been someone on the DIS boards who didn't have any inside info. :flower3:

I agree that they'll most likely take it down after Halloween. If nothing else, I'd expect that it would be back to its original state for the Thanksgiving crowds, but probably a lot sooner.

The overlay bits are already installed from the old Rockin' Space Mountain.

This year the change-over will take a while so they can test out the new projections, music, etc.

Next year, however, the change-over will take only 2-4 days.

I hope it opens before 9/25. I'm there 9/20-25, but I fly home on the 25th in the morning.

We are there 9/17-9/21...I expected the HM would be closed for the overlay, but not SM too! :sad2: My 23 year old son hasn't been to DL since he was about 11 and SM was one of the rides he was most looking forward to going on again. Oh well. :confused3 He hasn't seen DCA at all, so there should still be plenty of magic :wizard:

I will be at DL until Sept 27, so I will check it out for sure (SM)

Please, I have been searching for the info, when does HM re-open with the NBC overlay? Is that also Sept 25?

Yes. HMH will officially open on 9/25, unless maybe they will do a 'soft opening' a day or two before that.
