From a CM posting on another blog , For now just a rumor :

Just a heads up for anyone planning trips, Space Mountain will be going down for 2 months starting in August for safety upgrades.

Have a hard time believing they would make the switch back from HyperSpace mountain only to close it for two months right away.

Man, I hope that's not true :( My kid's favourite ride is Space Mountain, and it was down on our last trip in 2015. This would mean it's down for our trip in September too.

But hey. It's got to get refurbed some time. I just hope it's not during our trip. But safety first.

I would think if there was a safety issue, it would be taken down immediately to address instead of waiting a couple months.
Right? I remember our April, 2013 visit - someone was injured or something at WDW's Space Mountain, and the one at DL went down, too - immediately, with almost no notice, right before our trip.

The safety issue was at DL Space Mountain. A contractor fell 45 feet and was seriously injured.

No idea if the rumor is true or not of course, but it is believable. If they closed at the beginning of August and the refurb lasted for 6 or 7 weeks, they could have it back up as Ghost Galaxy in time for Halloweentime to start. If it took a little bit longer, they could still get it up and running for most of the Halloweentime season. Personally, I wasn't expecting the return to regular Space Mountain to last all that long. I thought it might run through the summer, switch to Ghost Galaxy, then switch back to Star Wars again at the beginning of November to help promote the new Star Wars movie coming out in December.

I do not think they will close Space Mountain IF they do close it will not be until after the summer season ends around August 20/21/22. Halloween Time would start around Sept. 9 and it would be down probably until before Thanksgiving. Splash Mountain was closed for most of Halloweentime in 2016.

This is where we all start getting anxious. "Which large group of rides will be down during MY trip?" Ugh

Once it was announced that Hyperspace Mtn was gone, I didn't have a strong desire to ride Space Mtn (having been on MK's version numerous times), so I won't personally mind if it's down. After going back and forth on dates, I planned my trip later in the summer for the RR, Rivers of America, and the new Fantasmic, and I don't regret that decision. I do feel bad for those who are big Space Mtn fans, however. And, I find it odd how little warning DL seems to give for these decisions, whether to reopen or to temporarily close attractions. I understand that DL is more of a locals park than WDW, but there are still people coming from long distances.

Actually makes sense to me. Agree in the timing- August is classic timing to take a ride down, early Aug would allow it to reopen Oct for ghost galaxy or they can take it down later in Aug & skip that overlay all together this year. Safety updates are always needed, ESPECIALLY in earthquake land and it's been awhile since Space went down for an extended period of time. (I feel sorry for all of you who will miss it though!)

Also, safety upgrades/updates aren't all like the contractor incident. Cal OSHA was involved and when they say shut the ride down you'd shut that ride down yesterday if you could. Non-emergency safety upgrades are what prevent the emergency safety upgrades!

If SM goes down, It will go down in late August and probably come back for Christmas season, early November. I wonder without a Ghost Galaxy if the resort will shift the Halloween Party to DCA.

It wasn't quite like that. The accident happened in November, but the ruling came out in April. They also took down Matterhorn and Soarin' at the same time to be ahead of the game. They were fine just over $80K for the accident.

I think I got confused! I must have been thinking about a different incident, OSHA was involved in a big way, I think Alice in Wonderland was effected... Definitely meandered my way :offtopic: and mixed in bad info- thanks for the correct! I better go find a second cup of coffee... :drinking1

Nailed it! Aside from rides just randomly going down all the time everyday, DL gives minimal notice for rides going down for refurbs. I got used to WDW giving at least 3 months warning. I was once able to move our trip one week so we could hit Splash Mt...thanks to plenty of refurb notice. With DL, it's about 6 weeks max, though it's usually 2-4 weeks. Shoot, I remember awhile back when Soarin' went down for a month+ with about 10 days notice.
