Space Mountain closing for 'refreshment' on April 19

Thanks for the info Deb,i was hoping they may close it before we go.I have never rode it-too  .But i have made a bet with Dd7 to go on it with her :scared1: ,looks like i will still be riding  .x.

I was dreading it going like Disneyland CA, the newer version of the ride is not in the same league as MK's rickety old ride. Reading this it says "But the changes to Orlando's version of the ride -- it's the original Space Mountain, having opened Jan. 15, 1975 -- are likely to be more modest."
So hoping they don't change it too much.

I'm really disappointed :sad2: After braving EE last year I was hoping to pluck up the courage to ride it this year, I rode it my first trip but since then have always been too scared! :scared1:

I spoke to a Manager at SM about this as I can not ride the DL or DLP one, and she told me that the tack was not going to change.

Is it very different to DLRP one? I hate that one as it shakes you around so much. I think I read some where that WDW one doesn't have an inversion like DLRP is that right? Does it blast you off like DLRP?

It's very different, no blast off, no inversions, just dips and sharp corners, a really tame coaster.

a bit of shame for our May trip next, opps, this year

We don't do caosters of any sort but last trip I gritted teeth and managed the cold sweat and did the three mountains. DD and I were looking forward to doing it again this year, DW not so. Oh well still one or two things to do there :rolleyes1

Thanks for the heads-up. Although we can join the disappointed queue as I suspect my coaster freak kids would have enjoyed this in the summer :sad2:

I love this ride but it really needed an update I am glad tis finally happening as it has been rumoured for the last couple of years :thumbsup2

I thought it was an awful ride with an awful track - very outdated. My DD loved it though so will be disappointed - I don't mind, much better rides than SM eg Everest.

It is the only ride I go on time after time and laugh from getting on to getting off, its brilliant. Also the only ride left with character imo. Big Thunder is not bad but SM is (was:sad1: )the best ride in the whole of WDW for me.

This is what it looks like with lights on, took it at Xmas going around on the TTA, not a great pic as you have to take it thru glass with no flash at speed, used fastest shutter speed I could without it beeing too dark.

I think they can improve it without changing it to much - just by updating the track as riding it felt like a fair ground roller coaster to me, I don't like the seating ether as I can't see DD so I panic all the way around and getting out of the seat wearing a skirt is not the easiest thing!

I am glad they are not making it like DLRP though otherwise DD would not be able to ride it anymore. I read that the Disneyland CA version was an improvement on the WDW version and a lot smoother with updated effects.:confused3

I couldn't agree more, we must've gone on this ride at least a dozen times on our last trip, brilliant, I'm not sure that I want to have it 'improved'. Rides/attractions such as Toy Story Mania are very good, but I can have an experience like that any time I turn the PS3 or Xbox 360 on, to me Space Mountain represents everything that is good about WDW. :thumbsup2

100% Agree :thumbsup2

I love the new rides such as EE and RnR but nothing quite matches up to SM it is a classic and should be left as is! I don't mind the repairing and making it more reliable. It does sound like they are not changing too much from the interview :thumbsup2

I've been on the Paris one quite a few times and absolutely love it, when we went n the WDW one for the first time in September I must admit I was very surprised, and disappointed, when I saw the trains, as they looked very tame - they reminded me of the ones on the black hole at Alton Towers.

But I was pleasantly surprised, it was a really fun coaster and much better than it first looked!

We enjoyed as it was fine for my 5 year old (will be 8 when we go back) It was ana adult ride they could enjoy.
