Souvenirs - cheaper online or better to buy at DLR?

I on the thrifty side, I admit! So I have been stockpiling souvenirs for Disney before we even go! I am wondering if this is a bit Scrooge-like? Is it better to just buy it at the park for "the experience" - am I going to scar my kids by whipping out my online/discount store DL items? :rotfl:

I just purchased some things from the Disney store online - some Christmas pjs (there was a discount for buying 2), plus a purchase with purchase Mickey/Minnie ornament ($10 - list price is $20). Would you get these same deals at the park? If so, then it might be better to buy at the park to not pay for shipping, right?

Thanks for your thoughts!

No. Because most of the stuff sold online are from the Disney STORE not the parks. The stuff in the parks costs a lot more than the stuff in the Stores. The Disney Parks merchandise online is usually priced comparably to what its sold for in the parks.

Ah! This is exactly what I needed to know - can always count on a DIS board expert for this nit-picky good info!! Thanks!:cool1:

I did the same thing on our last trip.
Bought Disney t-shirts and pajamas from walmart.
Bought Disney crayons and colouring books from the dollar store.
Bought glo-sticks from the dollar store.
Bought Mickey ears and other stuff from the Disney Outlet store that travels through our area every so often.

We brought it all with us, and the kids didn't care where it came from!
I did let each kid pick one souvenir to buy at the parks.

Some things are cheaper though. Look for "Disney Parks Authentic" when searching disneystore.com, also, they run sales every once in awhile.

The sweatshirt I bought at DLR was $69.95, and online the same exact sweatshirt was $59.95, and on top of that, the DLR version (not the WDW version, weird) was marked down to half off!

Also, I find the DLR merchandise to be not as plentiful as WDW merchandise on the site.

And I agree about the glo-sticks, etc. I stocked up for my husband and I on our recent trip, and he loved it! LOL. We were all decked out with glo-bracelets for ElecTRONica.

I have been wondering about this too. So let me get this straight-only if it says Disney Parks Authentic on the disneystore.com website is it the SAME stuff as what's in the park?

Then for the stuff that isn't Disney Parks Authentic, the quality is worse? If so, how much worse?

I too was planning on stocking up on the store sale stuff, dollar store stuff, walmart etc before going and I am curious what the clothing quality difference is.

Sorry about tagging another question along-I was hoping to clarify the OP's question.

I find the items in the parks absurdly over priced and generally not better quality. Many items I have found elsewhere substantially lower priced such as at the Disney Character Warehouse (On Harbor north of Disneyland) or in Vegas and a few other cities. We do buy small items for the kids, glow necklaces, ear rings etc. at the parks but thats about it. Just cannot justify the high prices of clothes etc.

This is what we did too. It worked out well for us. We did buy them each a pair of ears and they two older kids each had a gift card with $40 (we were there for 6 days and will only be going to Disney once every 2-4 years at most).

Disney store clothing quality is much better than Walmart. It's not cheap quality. I don't typically buy clothing in the parks so I can't say if park quality is all that better or not.

Like the rest of you I was worried about saving money on all those tempting souvenir's inside the parks. We did a lot of window shopping while in both parks and Downtown Disney and it amazed me how much prices have went up since my last visit in 2006. The last day of our trip my husband and I were about to give in and spend the outrageous amounts our son and gifts for those back home were going to rack up, when my brain finally kicked in! We had let our son get a customized mickey ear hat and bubble gun (beware of these if you have kids, they are ALL OVER THE PARKS and it seemed like every child and some adults owned or wanted one) so we were already out $50 and still had to get gifts for family at home. We live in Las Vegas, the motherland of overpriced gifts and as a local, I know that all the Walmart's in the area have a souvenir section selling the EXACT same merchandise you would find in any basic souvenir shop. So, we called the closest Walmart (only a 5 minute drive and VERY EASY to find) to see if they had a section and YES! they did. I wasn't expecting much and figured the souvenir's wouldn't be the same but I figured I could pass them off on family at home without them knowing. To my amazement the Disney section was MUCH larger than I expected and I had seen 98% of the same stuff throughout the Disney Park shops. I was able to buy my niece and nephews the awesome cups I wanted for them but were priced 12.95-16.95 at Disneyland...Walmart price 3.99-4.99! I inspected this cup over and over because I couldn't believe it was the same cup and it was! I bought my sister a beautiful Cinderella clutch that was priced 49.95 at Disney..Walmart 12.95! The tote bag I had bought inside Disney for 19.99 was at Walmart for 4.95! I could go on and on! I will probably NEVER buy items at an amusement park again if it has a Walmart near by. Some stuff, like the mickey ears you have to get inside the Disneyland parks. I did find the Minnie ears at Walmart for only 3.95 vs 16 at Disney. I bought our t shirts ranging from newborn to adult from as little as 3.95 to 9.95 at Walmart. When we went back to the park later that day I was curious about how much I actually saved and if the items really were the same. After a very tiring trek through the parks I found that the items WERE in fact the same (except for one t shirt) and the price for all my purchases (not all listed above) if bought at Disneyland would have been over $500, my Walmart total $72.79! Oh ya, and that ever so popular Bubble Blower Gun I mentioned, Walmart also has one very similar (it doesn't have the neon lights that come on at dark,:):rotfl: $15) for only 4.95. The neon lights were very fun but for parents with little ones that won't make it through the dark hours, the Walmart version is perfect! I was a bit impressed by a few things at Disney and I would suggest using this two in one system if it will be useful to you. During the constant "Mommy I want Cotton Candy, Mommy Can I have a drink, Mommy I want popcorn" I noticed that a R2D2 container similar to one my son liked in the Star Tours Shop was for sale with popcorn in it. To buy the container alone in the store it was $11 and for a small popcorn it was $4. To buy the container full of popcorn (same amount as a small) from a street vendor it cost me only $12. I can't believe I said ONLY $12, LOL. I had a similar find with a sports bottle filled with a very tasty smoothie. I guess you can find some deals inside the Disneyland/California Adventures parks but in order to have enough gas to get home or money to check those even heavier bags in at the airport I would suggest finding your nearest Walmart, finding ways to combine your food with souvenir's or do as so many other smart Ladies have done, SHOP AHEAD!!!!

We bought nearly all of our souvenirs at the Walmart on Euclid. The quality is fine. Prices were much less. I didn't see anything "better" about the quality of the items in the parks - they were just much more expensive.

Very interesting! Thanks! I did get the kids some stuff ahead of time, and then allowed the kids a small amount on a gift card to pick their own souvenirs. I'll have to go to Walmart next time too!

As a kid who's parents did this to me when growing up I couldn't tell the difference between what they got me from walmart or kmart vs what was in the parks.. I always felt special because I had something no one else had if anything :/ just my two cents.

If you have a Party City near you, they have kid size Disney lanyards for $1

We will be doing this with our upcoming trips. I love the shopping, but everything is so overpriced.
During our recent trip in April, we purchased a Darth Vader light saber from Star Trader. I didn't see the price at the time, but later noticed it was $55.00. Luckily, we received 20% off.
Last night we were at Target and saw the exact same light saber for under $30.

I buy things before the trip whether its for LL, WDW, or DL...Sea World was a little harder, but I managed. My son receives a special visit from Mickey the next morning if he was good the day before. I would have bought him souvenears anyway, so I might as well make it a little cheaper.

This year, he is getting his own gift card to use for souvenears on top of the surprise little Mickey visits. Purpose of the gift card is to help stay on budget.

The Walmart on Euclid...is it a regular Walmart or a Super Walmart? We usually do a Von's run for supplies, but if they have grocery items as well as souvies we may consider moving our 'stocking up' trip to Walmart..didn't realize there was one close by!

It is a Super Walmart! We bought our groceries there too.

It depends on what you're going to buy. General Disney merchandise will be cheaper outside of the parks, but items that specifically say Disneyland may not be available outside the parks.

And some items are only available in the parks. For instance, if your child wants a plush Jedi Mickey or Darth Goofy, you'll only find those in the parks or on ebay.
