I have a question, i called southwest about 4 times and i got a different answer each time. I had lost my sons Certificate and i am leaving in 5 days and 12 hours. LOL. Well i really don't have time to go get a copy of his birth Certificate. My son is 12, can anyone help me with this. When i called 2 people said he didn't need one because he was a minor and 2 said he need one. If any of you who have kids can help i would really appreciate it. Thank you

My son (6) has flown several times although never with SW, and we have NEVER needed his birth certificate. We are flying on SW in June so if he needs it for that flight it would be the first time ever.

Also, we are in Missouri so Im not sure if it will work for your state, but in our state you can go to your health dept and get a copy of a birth cert in a matter of about ten minutes. You might check into it.

good luck

We just flew late February with Southwest and weren't asked for birth certificates for our 3 sons (11, 10 & 4) on both flights.

thank you so much for responding so quickly. I am just so nervous about this. Like i said we are leaving in 5 days and now 11 hours, and there are not enough hours in a day. I am just so busy. I really don't have time to pick it up.

threeboysmom did you have them on you just in case? I just don't know what to do. I don't want to get there and be turned down, i think i would sit in the airport in front of everyone and cry. LOL.

Thank you so much for responding amsyw and threeboysmom

A suggestion someone made to me once--try having a copy of his school records, which should, at least, have his SS# and full name and birthdate. You might be able to get a quick copy from the school administrative staff.

To second others, we've never been asked for my DD's birth certificate, EVEN THOUGH I have a different last name from her (which sometimes sends a red flag). I've always carried it though.

Took

I never even HEARD of having to have a birth certificate. We have never been asked by any airline for ID on my (now 15 year old) son, and we have never carried any, either!

We have flown Southwest many times and even though we always bring our 4 yr. old and 2 yr. olds birth certificates, we have NEVER been asked to present them...

No, you don't need one. The only time they ask for one is in the case of a "lap" child.
I don't think he qualifies. ;)

My DD brought her school ID card. It has her Photo and birth date on it! [she was insulted when they didn't even want to look at it!LOL!!]

Hi Everyone

Thank you for responding so quickly. I do have his SS card but they told me it wasn't enough. So i should call the school and get a copy of his school records. That will make it much easier on me. I put them somewhere so they wouldn't get lost, go figure. LOL. I hate when i put things away like this, now i have no idea where they can be. I am tearing my house apart, I have alot of cleaning ahead of me now. Thank you so much for your help.

Took, that is what scares me , my son and i have a different last name and so doesn't his step father. That is going to raise red flags i would think. I am going to have to do something. Thanks for your help

I would do everything possible to cover yourself. Since 9/11 policies and procedures with airlines and airports are sooooo un-predictable, I wouldn't want to risk anything. What if this is thier policy that is relaxed 98% of the time, and the day you leave there is some type of alert that puts everybody in the "by the book" mode. That would be my luck at least.

We have flown 6 times since 9/11 and haven't needed any type of ID for our two kids, DS9 & DD15. They ask how old DD is and when I say 15, they just let her go thru--this includes checking baggage, security checks and boarding.

She has been searched twice--they asked my permission first, though.

I fly frequently and have taken my daughter on several trips since 9/11. Usually she just goes thru with me. But, twice she has been asked to show her own identification. They accepted a school ID with picture. I wouldn't take a chance and assume no ID is necessary.

Only times I've heard of asking for the birth certificate was for a minor with a passport and needing a second ID for international flights. That shouldn't be an issue with Southwest.

My son went on a trip with the boy scouts a few years ago and he needed ID to cash travelers checks. They suggested I take him to the Motor Vehicle and get an ID card there.
I paid $10 and they had all the information just like my driver's liscence, except at the top it said NOT A LISCENCE.
You might want to get him this.
by the way, my son had a ball shoing all his friends his "fake" driver's liscence. 12 year olds are so gullible.

I'm flying down on Southwest in 2 weeks... Southwest told me that normally they do NOT ID kids.... however after 911 IF the airport had an emergency... OR if there was a code Adam..( a lost or kidnapped child) No child would be allowed on the flights without ID. Barring any problems, they probably won't be asked. Just in case, I'm bringing mine anyway.

We flew from New Orleans to Orlando last Nov/Dec. At the ticket counter, I gave the lady DH & my drivers license, and the kids' birth certificates. She just glanced at the bc, and said we were set. When we went to go through security, the officer checked drivers license and the birth certificates of each of the kids. He even asked my 5 yr old when her birth day was. When we went to get our boarding passes, they did check drivers licenses, but not bc. At the airport in Orlando to come home, we were not asked for birth certificates, not even to go through security, although I had them out and ready to show. To get our boarding pass, I had to show drivers licenses. Then, as they checked each person waiting in line, you had to show your drivers license again. Then, when you turned your boarding pass in to get on the plane, we had to show drivers license again (they didn't ask to see birth certificates).

Well i got nervous and i went today and bought his birth certificate, just incase. thank you for your help everyone. I am leaving in 1 day 13 hours and 22 minutes. I am so excited. I hope i am not forgetting anything else. I hope you all have a nice and safe time in disney.
