So what happens if I book with points and then need to cancel my trip? Do the points just go back to my account? Do they expire sooner or anything? Debating booking flights with points bc the price is right but we are not 100% sure we are going.

Yes, that's the beauty of SW points, they go back into your account unrestricted. If the number of points go down, you can do a modify reservation and the extra points go back to your account. Love it!

So when you book with points, it is basically like booking a fully refundable fare, right?

Love booking with the points! Many times we are quite unsure just who is going or if we are going or returning, so using points works great! And I watch the flights and if the points required decreases, then I make that change and the points go immediately back into my account.

Just booked 7 RT flights yesterday for May on points.

Sometimes I book with points, just to sort of hold the fare.

If it comes down, sometimes I even cancel it and rebook with cash, to save the points for flexibility in the future. (but I would be ok using the points, if it did not come down)

i like it because then I do not have expiring credits linked to each family members name.

If the number of points needed decreases and you modify the reservation to save points, do you keep early bird check-in that was already purchased? TIA!

Yes, as long as you CHANGE your reservation and do not CANCEL and rebook.
