southwest refund question

My parents have a condo in Florida which they drive down to in the fall from Canada. I booked fights on SW for them to come home at Christmas. They have just found out that their place is ruined from the hurricane (Jeanne) and will not be available for them to stay in until at least January. Will Southwest just give them a credit or would they be able to get a refund. The credit will probably not do them any good since they wouldn't be needing flights again until next Christmas.

Not sure if they will give them a refund, you would need to call Customer service/care for that. They have been wonderful with the hurricane situation.
Failing that, they will issue a credit . This has to be used within one year from the booking date.

DH and I were suppoed to go to WDW on 9/18-9/28 but because of the hurricane, we canceled and are rescheduling for sometime in January. We were able to cancel our flights with Southwest and were issued a credit in the full amount and received a travel voucher within 7-8 days of canceling the trip.
With that in mind, I really do not see how they could charge your parents to cancel or reschedule their trip under those circumstances; they should explain their situation and perhaps they could extend the dealine date of the voucher. I once had a travel voucher with Southwest - I forgot about it and when I found it, it had expired. I sent it in with a nice letter and recieved another year extension for the credit.

Thanks for the replies. A credit extension would be great. They would like to use SW but just not sure they can use the credit before it would expire.

If they want to issue a credit, ask them to extend it until after next Christmas,(2005), I bet they would do that.

Southwest is really great about issuing credits, etc. They will not only give you an extension, but you can even transfer the credit to someone else, if you want. And, because of the circumstances, I am sure they will be most helpful. Call 1-800-IFLYSWA.
