Southwest free ticket before 1/30/12...Race Ideas?

Hi folks,

I'm pretty new to all this but have signed up for the Princess Half in 2012! It's the race I always imagined being my first half (you know, for the last few months before I started running in March...).

Then I looked at my Southwest account and I have a frequent flier ticket that expires 1/30/12--I can't use it for the Princess! I honestly don't see much going on between now and then that I can use it for, and if the family is coming with me to the Princess (and vacation the week before--school's out), we can't afford to take another big vacation between now and then, even if there's one free ticket.

So...I'm thinking I should use it for a race. I was all excited about the Las Vegas RnR Half, but I have a work conference that weekend (argh). The W&D is sold out, and I don't have anyone to run the relay with (but maybe I could find someone here???). I was thinking about Tink...that could work out, but is 3 weeks too close together for 2 half marathons for a beginner? The coast to coast would be awesome, though. Honestly, marathon weekend feels a little intimidating to me, and all things being equal, if I'm doing two half marathons within a month or so, I might as well get the C2C, right? But if I did marathon weekend in WDW, I could get an AP that would cover the Princess...

:headache:

What should I do? Advice is welcome, but I can't promise I'll take it... :rolleyes1

You really could do the January and half and Princess with no issue at all. If you were to run the Tink as a training run, you should have no Princess issues, either. Yes close together but not unmanageable Simply run Tink as your last long training run, recovery two long runs and then run Princess.

From a physical perspective, either option works. The coast to coast makes that very desirable option...three medals for two runs in one month.

Did you know that if you call SW you can extend the time you have for your voucher by paying $50 dollars. We have the same issue for next year, so I called SW and they said it was no problem to extend it by paying the $50 dollars. Good Luck!

If it isn't much longer, they will sometimes waive the fee...so it is worth calling. Regardless, the Princess is still a possibility and it was my first race...and I am so happy that it was. I can't image the WDW Marathon or WDW Half Marathon as being my first race...but since the Tinkerbell Half is similar, it could be a possibility too. Your first race being the first time they have a race would be pretty cool. Good Luck!

Thanks you guys. This is great advice. Of course now Coach has me thinking seriously about getting the C2C so the perfectly sensible idea about extending the ticket is much less appealing! :D

In the end the smart thing to do will be to just wait and do the C2C next year. But I might have to ruminate about it for a little while first.
