I hope that someone can help me with this question I have.

What happens if I book non-refundable airline tickets for an upcoming trip and I get a "ding" for a much reduce fare? Would I be able to cancel the non-refundable tickets and get the "ding" rate.

I just now found out about "ding". I am trying to figure this out.

In the past we have called Southwest to get a "credit" for the difference in the fare. They keep the credit on file for future travel (within a years time I think) You can't get your money back for the other flight.

Thanks for the response!

So, I call SW and tell them that I want the "ding" rate instead of the original one? Then I will have a credit for the difference? Will SW be able to book me at the "ding" rate or is that something that has to be done online by me?

Also, my inlaws will be taking the trip with us. Can I book their tickets with my credit?

If I buy refundable to begin with I won't have to deal with a credit?

I don't hink you can get the "ding" rate over the phone. At least that's what I was told when I tried last year.

What I did instead, was go the ding page, book the flight and went all the way to the payment page and filled out everything except for payment form.
I then opened a second window and brought up my original reservation. I canceled it and got the refund. I went back to the other window and was able to use my Ticketless Travel Funds to pay for the airfare.

and yes you use your credit to pay for someone elses flight.
