Southwest CC 50,000 point question

Companion pass points are just Southwest Rapid Rewards points. Besides the credit card sign up bonuses (and cc usage) you can earn them from Southwest flights, using the Southwest Shopping Portal and use of the Southwest Dining Program.
This isn't entirely correct. Not all RR points are CP eligible points. Many bonus points earned from a partner (e.g. 1000 bonus points for a RocketMiles reservation) do not count towards CP (although some do). Make sure you do some research before you invest in ways to accumulate points, particularly when it comes to partner bonus points.

Some CP-eligible points:
  • Points earned from SW flights
  • Points earned from RR Visa spend
  • Points from E-Rewards (except initial 500 point sign-up bonus)
  • Points from E-Miles
  • Points from CC referrals
  • Points from CC sign-up bonus
  • Points from RR Shopping Portal (I have found that the "bonuses" from the shopping portal alway count towards CP.
There are many others, but that's just a list off the top of my head to get you started. Reminder: only points earned within the calendar year (Jan 1 - Dec 31) count towards earning CP. Your CP will be good for the remainder of the current calendar year, and the entire next calendar year (e.g. my CP expires 12/31/17).

Hi all, I have a question on the card~ I know if you cancel/change a flight the funds go back into a credit to be used within 1 year from booking. If you book using points, are they subject to the same time frame or are they put back into the pot of "miles do not expire"? (I know terms are always changing, but looking for current info)

If you book with points and cancel (or refare), your points go back into your account's general pool.

Note that points do expire if you don't spend or earn any points for a 24-month period.

Sweet. Thanks for the quick reply, that cemented our decision to get the SW card . Now if we can just pull off that Companion Fare perk, lol!
