I know the demensions for the carryon at Southwest are:10x16x24. But, if your demensions are not exactly the same, how can you figure out if it is acceptable? For instance, my carryon demensions are: 19x13x8.25 - is that ok? If you multiply the actual numbers, Southwest's demensions come out to over 3,000 inches and my carryon comes out to a little over 2,000. Is that ok?

I hope this makes sense!! Thanks for any answers.

Actually no, they have to fit into a little box of the same dimensions (they have them everywhere). The reason for these measurements is so they will fit under the seat or in the overhead safely.
Check the bag, you will be much happier.

I would think the demensions of my bag would still fit in that size space since neither part of my bag is 24 inches. You don't think so? To me the bag looks right on size with everything else we have ever brought on board for carryons - it looks like it would fit under the seat. Maybe I will just call Southwest and ask. I don't mind checking usually, but last time we flew home from Orlando, our baggage sat on the runway in the rain for hours and never got loaded on the plane  . Not too much of a problem if we are coming home, but really bad if we were just arriving.

I thought DH and I would get away with not having to check luggage and just speeding though the airports since we had no kids on this trip. Oh well, not a biggie if we have to check it. Thanks!

Hi again,
I do apologize, I misread your post. I am sure you will be fine with that as a carry on. I would call to make sure. Keep in mind, SWA discourages carry ons and encourages checked luggage. Their motto "don't be a bin hog" . With one bag, you definitely don't qualify for the dubious title. :)

Thanks Gail - Of course being the nuerotic person I am, I already called SWA. I talked to a very sweet girl on the phone and she assured me my bag was much smaller than need be. Now I am wondering if I can fit everything in for four days into that - but I will - even if I have to pack unmentionables in my purse - Just kidding!!!

While I have you here Gail - will I still be able to check in 2 hours prior to flight if I only have carryons? We have always done skycab, so I don't know. I assume you just go to the SWA counter before you go through security? If we couldn't check in early without checking bags, I would definately check something. Thanks again :)

You can go to the counter up to four hours ahead of time, BUT, you don't need to do this, if you are leaving an airport with a checkin kiosk and are not checking bags, you can get your boarding pass there. http://www.southwestair.com/travel_center/kiosks/kiosks.html
This should save some time.
