I have never flown southwest before and have no clue what's a good boarding position. My mom and I got boarding numbers B38 and B39 and I was wondering if we will be able to find seats together and have room for a carry on in the overhead. Thank you.

You shouldn't have a problem with the carryons, people tend to just check everything with Southwest because it's free, even things like backpacks. Is this a flight to Orlando? Because finding seats may be an issue if there a large group of families since they are allowed to board before the B group regardless of their actual boarding position.

We will be taking the magical express so I like to have a carry on! Yes the plane will be going to Orlando, leaving tomorrow in the morning! Even if we don't end up sitting by each other it's not a big deal, it would just be nice! Thank you for the response! (:

My husband and I have been in the C boarding group on a plane heading to Orlando and we're able to sit together. Since my husband wanted an aisle seat too we ended up about 3 rows from the back of the plane, but we sat together!

DD and I sat in row 2 both ways last August, and we had B group. In both instances the person we sat with had their stuff spread across both seats. But readily gave them up when we asked if they were taken.
if someone is alone, ask....
oh and there isn't supposed to be seat saving on SW... so maybe peek and see if the bathroom has the vacant sign on it when your boarding. There are some people that will purchase one early bird.
Good luck!

SW has no official policy on seat saving. It will likely come down to whomever has the stronger disposition for conflict.

OP, you should be fine finding two seats together. You might have to head toward the back of the plane, but you should be fine.

Flight Attendants won't intervene either. You should have no problem sitting together.

I think B38 and B39 is right on the border. I agree with the folks here you should be fine especially with a large number of families going to Orlando. However, I recommend you take the first available 2 seats together as you board. Southwest only flies 737's but they do have different versions of 737's in their fleet. Coming back from Chicago this weekend we were on one of the smaller planes and we had B40 and B41. We got the last 2 seats together.

Yes, and ask anyone alone in a row, with their junk spread onto the middle seat, to move it and sit there. Some solo travelers hope to block the middle seat, make it look occupied and hope it stays that way.

Our last 2 flights, to and from Orlando and Newark, were only 2/3 full, it was so nice, mostly empty middle seats in the whole plane.

Your boarding positions are basically in the middle of the boarding process. I also agree you should be able to find two seats together - maybe in the back, and maybe not the exact configuration you want - but I think you'd at least be together at that point.
