Southwest backup flight

I've made a backup Southwest flight for my husband in case other travel plans with friends don't pan out. It's my understanding that he can cancel the flight up to 20 minutes beforehand and still get the points back if he doesn't fly.

My question is can he still cancel the flight if he has checked in for a boarding pass? Do we go ahead and check in at 24 hours? This would be a matter of missing a flight 2 hours before and then taking the backup flight if needed. Thank you!
