My DW, 5yo son and myself are flying Southwest out of Detroit in January. At his age are we eligible for boarding between A & B groups or is he too old now to get boarded as a 'family with small children' because of his age.

Depends on your airport. You will more than likely be able to pre-board at your home airport, but it is 4 years old at MCO.

Are you not shooting to get A passes?

The early boarding cut-off age for Southwest is 4 years, regardless of the airport. Go for the boarding passes. Even with a boarding pass the "high" B's we were able to get 3 seats together on a full flight from Buffalo to Orlando.

4 and under to do family boarding. But even the families board after the A group, so just get an A boarding pass and all is well. :thumbsup2

$10 per person will get you Early Bird check in, which will probably make it easier to get you A passes and you won't have to sit by a computer or cellphone waiting for your check-in time. (There's still a chance - although it appears to be an outside one - that if a lot of passengers sign up for Early Bird check in you won't get an A pass even if you use it.)
