We love southwest and do get nervous that DS (10) who is EXTREEMLY shy/anxious around strangers would have to sit away from one of us. However, that has never been a problem, we always get there an hour and a half early and he has always been able to sit next to me, infact most times the three of us are together, that said though I can not imagine anyone minding trading one seat over if asked politely (and offered the window seat or whatever) most people have compassion and would prefer to allow children to sit with their parents.
ps: I don't think Gail was trying to be snotty at all-she is a very nice and caring person -just my two cents.
